SVC drops Florida finale to Albion, 4-3

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 10) – The Saint Vincent baseball team dropped its Florida finale by a 4-3 score to Albion College at the RussMatt Invitational Tournament.

Both teams were relatively quiet offensively through the first two innings. Saint Vincent starting pitcher Jimmy Malone retired the first eight Albion hitters before surrendering a two-out double to the number nine hitter and then walking the next batter on a 3-2 pitch in the third inning. Riley Stesiak followed with a three-run home run to left field to give the Brits a 3-0 advantage after three innings.

Saint Vincent wasted little time in responding, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. The Bearcats recorded two runs on two hits, while also taking advantage of two Albion errors and a hit batter. The big hit of the inning came from Ramon Milke, who singled to right field to drive in Eddie Kilkeary for the second run.

Patrick McElfish laced a leadoff double to center field to start the sixth. McElfish moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bobby Finn and then scored on another Albion wild pitch to tie the score at 3-3.

Saint Vincent put a runner on second base in the top of the seventh but could not score the potential go-ahead run. Albion would take the lead in the bottom of the frame.

The Brits put the leadoff runner on base with a single up the middle. A successful sacrifice bunt moved the runner into scoring position. After a base hit up the middle put runners on the corners, a perfectly executed double steal in which Saint Vincent threw the ball to second, allowed Albion to take a 4-3 edge after seven innings. Albion made that lead hold up, as Saint Vincent could not rally in the final two innings.

Malone suffered the tough luck loss, tossing his second complete game of the week. The sophomore lefty worked eight innings, allowing four runs on four hits. Malone struck out seven and walked two in the loss. Shane Fajt paced the SVC offense with a two-hit performance, which included a double.

Scott Grant tossed a complete game for Albion, working all nine innings. Grant allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits. Grant struck out eight and did not walk a Bearcat batter.

Saint Vincent wraps up the Spring Break trip with a 3-5 record, while Albion moves to 1-7 overall.

The Bearcats return to action when they travel to the Builder Invitational next weekend in Newport News, Virginia. SVC will take on the host Newport News Apprentice School on Friday, March 16. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
