FREDERICK, Md. (March 10) - The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference road contest to Hood College by a 15-10 score in Frederick, Md.
Saint Vincent scored the initial two goals of the contest, as
Frank Casile and
Hunter Sharp found the back of the next in the first three-plus minutes of the game to give the Bearcats an early 2-0 advantage. Hood responded back in a big way with the next three scores and seven of the next eight goals overall to take an 8-3 lead with 4:56 left in the second quarter.
The Bearcats would attempt to rally, scoring the final three goals of the first half to pull within an 8-6 score at the break.
Alex Mueser, Casile and Sharp recorded the goals for SVC during the late first half surge. A goal by
Jeremy Kennedy pulled the Bearcats back within two (9-7) with 10:07 left in the third quarter. However, the host Blazers responded with six of the next seven goals to take a 15-8 edge early in the fourth quarter to all but put the game out of reach.
Sharp and
Ben Price tacked on late goals for the Bearcats to close the scoring at 15-10.
Hood held a decisive 48-26 shot advantage over Saint Vincent, including a 32-18 differential in shots on goal. The Bearcats committed 15 turnovers while the Blazers made just seven miscues. Hood also held a 30-26 advantage in ground balls over SVC and a slight 15-13 edge in face-off wins.
Sharp led the SVC offense with four goals, while Mueser added a three-point effort in the loss.
Luke Falvo collected a team-best six ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Michael Layton started in goal and surrendered eight goals while making 10 saves over the first 30 minutes.
Brandon Martin played the second half in net, allowing seven goals while making seven saves.
The loss evens Saint Vincent's overall record at 3-3. Meanwhile, Hood improves to 4-1 overall in 2018.
Saint Vincent opens Ohio River Lacrosse Conference play when they travel to Grove City College on Wednesday, March 14. Start time is slated for 7 p.m. at Robert E. Thorn Field in Mercer County.
