LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 25) - A late fourth quarter rally helped propel the Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team to a dramatic 11-10 road victory over three-time defending Ohio River Lacrosse Conference champion Transylvania University.
Saint Vincent opened up a 3-2 lead after the first quarter of play, getting a goal each from
Alex Mueser,
Frank Casile and
Joe Puvel. The Bearcats extended their lead to 5-2 late in the second quarter after
Hunter Sharp and Casile tallied unassisted scores. Transylvania would add a goal with 1:45 to play in the halftime to cut the Bearcat lead to 5-3 at the halftime break.
The host Pioneers outscored the Bearcats by a 3-1 margin in the third quarter, which included a man-down goal, tying the contest at 6-6 heading into the fourth quarter. Transylvania continued to build momentum early in the fourth quarter, tallying three scores over the first two-plus minutes to take a 9-6 advantage over SVC. However, the Bearcats showed tremendous resolve to come back against the Pioneers.
After the two teams traded goals to make the score 10-7 with 12:03 left, the Bearcats used a late rally to complete the comeback. Sharp and Kennedy scored back-to-back to bring the Bearcats within a single goal, making the score 10-9 at the 5:14 mark. After assisting on two of the previous three SVC scores,
Anthony Hogeback would then add a goal to tie the game at 10-10 with just 3:31 remaining.
Hogeback would find Kennedy to score the eventual game-winning goal with just 1:05 to play. Sophomore goalkeeper
Brandon Martin and the Bearcat defense made that lead hold up, as Transylvania failed to convert on three separate shot attempts over the final 13 seconds.
Kennedy paced the offense with three goals, all of which came after halftime. Casile and Sharp added two goals each.
Zach Novelli picked up a team-best four ground balls, while Martin stopped 13 shots in 60 minutes of action in goal.
The win was the first head-to-head victory for the Bearcats over the Pioneers since the two teams have matched up in ORLC play over the past four seasons. The two teams met in the ORLC Tournament Championship game in both 2015 and 2017.
The win moves Saint Vincent to 3-0 in ORLC play and 6-3 overall. The loss drops Transylvania to 2-1 in league games and 3-5 overall. The Pioneers entered Sunday's game having won 17 straight games against ORLC opponents, a streak that dated back to April 2, 2016.
Saint Vincent travels to Franciscan University on April 4 for a non-conference contest with the Barons. Start time is set for 4 p.m.
