Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball team remains undefeated in PAC action

The SVC women's basketball team improved to 6-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a 69-64 win over Waynesburg University on the road. It was the team's 10th consecutive victory.

SVC led most of the evening, but held off a determined late charge by the Yellow Jackets to improve to 12-2 overall.   Paige Montrose recorded a double-double on the night, reaching double figures in both points (16) and rebounds (10).

The Bearcats got on the board in the first minute, with a Montrose bucket tying the game, 2-2. Kayla Slovenec later put SVC in front for the first time, 5-4, with a three at the 8:03 mark.

A jumper by Erin Giancola helped expand the lead to seven, 13-6, but the hosts fought back, going on a 6-0 run to make it a one-point game with 3:27 remaining in the first quarter.

However, four points by Montrose, with a score by Taylor Boring in between, returned the lead to 7 points, 19-12, and a basket by Stephanie Vaughn in the final minute of the quarter put SVC in front by nine after the first 10 minutes of play.

Giancola started the scoring in the second quarter with a layup that made the score 23-12, but once again the Jackets came back, cutting the margin to just four, 25-21, with 6:23 on the clock.

Later in the quarter, back-to-back threes by Maria Morgan made it a 36-25 Bearcat advantage, and a score by Slovenec ended the half with SVC in front, 38-27.

Early in the third, Jenna Lafko hit a jumper to make it a 15-point game, 44-29, SVC's largest lead of the contest to that point.

The advantage grew to 20 on another layup by Montrose and a pair of free throws by Bri Van Volkenburg that made the score 49-29.

A pair of threes by Waynesburg's Elena McDermott cut the gap to 13 (56-43) at the end of the third quarter.

The comeback continued in the fourth quarter for the hosts, as they continued to chip away at the Bearcat lead, taking advantage of timely shooting and several fouls by the Bearcats. By the midway point of the quarter, it was a 5-point game, 61-56 in favor of SVC.

With 3:53 to go, a missed Bearcat shot led to a Waynesburg rebound and a score that made it 61-58. Waynesburg had a  chance to close within one with 2:30 left, but missed the shot. Giancola pulled down the rebound and scored at the other end of the court to extend the lead back to five.

Another Jacket miss resulted in a rebound by Jenna Lafko, and Slovenec was eventually fouled with 1:50 remaining, hitting one of two shots.

The hosts scored quickly on the next possession, making the score 64-60, and a quick foul put the Bearcats back at the line.    Waynesburg made it a 2-point game near the one minute mark, but Van Volkenburg answered with a layup just six seconds later to make the score 66-62.

Waynesburg drew a foul with 49 ticks remaining, hitting one shot to make the score 66-63, and a Bearcat turnover gave Waynesburg the ball with 35 seconds remaining.

After a timeout, the hosts missed a layup, but Andrea Orloskly grabbed a clutch offensive rebound and drew a foul, going to the line with 19 seconds remaining.  She missed the first shot and hit the second, cutting the gap to two, but Waynesburg was forced to foul.  Carlee Kilgus hit both shots at the charity stripe with 18 seconds on the clock, giving SVC a 68-64 lead.

Slovenec then came up with a steal with 11 seconds remaining, sealing the win for the Bearcats.

In addition to her 16 points and 10 rebounds, Montrose recorded 4 steals.  Slovenec added 11 points and 7 boards, while Lafko chipped in 9 points and 3 steals.  Giancola had 9 points and 6 rebounds.
