The Saint Vincent men's basketball team lost a non-conference game at home to Penn State-Beaver by a score of 71-61.
Â
The Lions had all of the momentum in the early going, taking an 11-0 lead at the 14:09 mark, forcing SVC to take a time out.Â
Collin Neville then got the Bearcats on the board with 13:49 left on the clock with a layup. A basket by
Kyle Pope later cut the gap to seven, 13-6, but by the midway point of the half, the Lions had rebuilt the lead to 17-6.
Â
Four more points from Pope and a three from the corner by
Andrew Reed brought SVC back within six, 21-15, with 6:25 remaining. Once again the Lions got the hot hand, taking a 28-17 lead with just over four minutes left in the half. A long-range three by the Lions at the 2:15 mark ran the lead to 13 (33-20), but the Bearcats then went on a 5-point run to make it a 33-25 game, and the margin remained 8 at the break, 35-27.
Â
Saint Vincent's
David Stephen scored the first two points of the second half to cut the gap to just six, but the Lions responded, hitting a pair of threes near the 14-minute mark to go in front by 16, 47-31.Â
Later, a conventional three-point play by Stephen, followed by a
Drew Normandin layup made it 49-38 with 12 minutes left. After the Lions returned the lead to 15 points,
Trevoris Waugh scored on a putback, then followed with a steal and coast-to-coast layup, making the score 53-42 with 9:42 on the clock.
Â
A Stephen three just over a minute later cut the margin to eight, and a steal by Neville led to a free throw by Normandin that made the score 53-46, but three free throws by the Lions later made it a 10-point game once again, 62-52, and the visitors went on to win by 10.
Â
Stephen led SVC with 16 points, while Normandin had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Waugh added 6 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals. Pope added 9 points, all in the first half. Â
Â
The Lions were led by John Foster with 24 points.
Â
Saint Vincent is now 3-5 on the season, while the Lions improve to 3-2.
The Bearcats will return to action on Wednesday, December 4, hosting Washington & Jefferson College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup.Â
