The Saint Vincent men's basketball team earned its first victory of the season, defeating Penn State-Schuylkill by a score of 75-66 in the second round of the Lycoming College Tournament.
SVC struggled in the early going, trailing by as many as 10 points (22-12) near the midway point of the first half. An 8-point run started with a conventional three-point play by
David Stephen, followed by the same thing from
Drew Normandin and capped by a Stephen layup, cut the margin to just two, 22-20, with 9:10 remaining in the first half.Â
Â
At the 3:41 mark, the Bearcats tied the game at 28-28 on a
Cletus Helton jumper, and took their first lead of the game just over a minute later on a bucket by
Andrew Reed (32-31). However, the Lions came back and retook the lead before the half ended, taking a 36-34 advantage into the break.
Â
SVC trailed by three early in the second half before a layup by Normandin and a three from Stephen put the Bearcats back in front, 44-42, and the team would never trail again.
Â
At the 11:07 mark, Reed hit a three to increase the lead to eight, 52-44, and after Penn State cut the gap back to five,
Brendan Hempstead scored and drew a foul, hitting the free throw to once again make it an 8-point game.
Â
With just over two minutes remaining, the margin was cut to just four, 70-66, but Stephen responded with five straight points to end the game.
Â
Normandin had the best day of his Bearcat career, with 20 points and 11 rebounds, and was named to the All-Tournament team. Stephen had 19 points, while
Kyle Pope (11) and Hempstead (10) also scored in double figures. Reed had 9 points, six assists, and six rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. Hempstead also had 6 assists.
Saint Vincent is now 1-1 on the season, while Penn State drops to 0-2. The Bearcats will host Penn State-Fayette on Tuesday night (November 12) at 7PM at the Carey Center.
