For the second straight day, a split doubleheader in Clermont, Florida led to a split decision by the Bearcat softball team. After falling to Bridgewater College by a score of 8-0, SVC rallied for a 9-4 win over Houghton College in game two.
Against Bridgewater, the Bearcats were unable to find any offense, as the team managed just one hit against freshman Emily Clifford.
Kelsie Linden had the lone SVC hit, in the fifth inning. The game was shortened to just five innings due to the 8-run rule.
In game two, the Bearcats got on the board early, as
Sydney Gurneal singled to lead off the first and scored on a 2-run home run by
Alona Sleith. SVC added a pair of runs in the third inning thanks to a pair of Houghton errors and an RBI single by Sleith.
The 4-0 lead would not hold up, as Houghton tallied four runs in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a pair of SVC errors.
Saint Vincent retook the lead in the fourth, as
Kaylee Ludwick singled, stole a base, moved up on a passed ball, and scored on a single by Gurneal. An inning later,
Lauren Miller was hit by a pitch to lead off, then moved to third on a Sleith double.
Shae Robson drove home Miller with a sacrifice fly, then
Johnna Karas doubled home Sleith to make it 7-4. SVC added two more runs in the 7th to seal the win.
Celia Knappenberger went the distance to get the win, giving up only two earned runs while striking out six.
Saint Vincent is now 2-2 on the year and will face Penn State-New Kensington and Penn State-Brandywine on Tuesday (March 5) in Clermont.
