Saint Vincent travels to Franciscan


The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team traveled to Franciscan University of Steubenville to face the Barons. The Bearcats fell in the Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup, 16-12.

Franciscan scored the opening goal a minute and three seconds into the action. Naomi Schwaiger tied the game at one just three minutes later.

The Barons regained the lead when they scored two consecutive goals. Joey Smith and the Bearcats answered as Smith scored two goals in a 46-second span to even the game at three.

Franciscan respond with two more goals and led 5-3 with 13:49 to go in the first half.

Saint Vincent once again battled back. Schwaiger netted her second of the game and just under two minutes later, Courtney Kloos tied the game at five. 

The Barons then broke open the game a little with four-straight goals with just under five minutes to go in the first. 

Schwaiger completed the hat trick but it was Franciscan that scored the final goal of the half as the host team led 10-6 going into the break.

In the second half, the Barons scored the first two goals to extend their lead to six.

Smith scored the Bearcats first goal of the second half thanks to a Kloos pass. Franciscan scored another goal before SVC got on the score sheet again. 

Kloos scored her second goal of the game followed by Rachel Belles as she netted her first of the contest. The Bearcats still trailed 13-9.

Franciscan and Saint Vincent traded goals as Schwaiger scored with a helper from Smith. The Barons scored once more to extend its lead to five (15-10).

Schwaiger added her fifth goal of the game with 5:55 to go in regulation. Belles then scored 2:21 later to bring the deficit within three (15-12). 

Franciscan scored the final goal of the game and won by the 16-12 final.

Schwaiger led the Bearcats with five goals and an assist. Kloos added two goals and assists while Smith finished with three goals and an assist.

Brittany Bain started in net for the Barons while Maria Franey got the nod for SVC. Franey made seven saves in the game.

Saint Vincent is now 2-7, 2-3 in the PAC as the team returns home to face Thiel College on Tuesday, April 23. Game time is 4 p.m.
