Bearcats keep playoff chances alive


The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team battled through rain and delays in its Presidents' Athletic Conference game against Thiel College. The Bearcats won 21-9 and improved their playoff chances.
 
A little under two minutes into the game, Corinne Burk corralled a ground ball and went coast-to-coast for the first goal. Two minutes later, Joey Smith gave Saint Vincent its second goal of the game.
 
Trailing 2-0, the Tomcats scored at the 25:40 mark. After the game's start had already been delayed, the game was once delayed again this time at the 23:11 mark in the first.
 
After a 40-minute delay, play was resumed and so was the Bearcats' scoring efforts. Courtney Kloos netted her 17th of the season to give SVC the 3-1 lead. Naomi Schwaiger put her name on the scoresheet with two consecutive goals with assists to Kloos and Smith.
 
Smith then found the back of the net two more times to complete the hat trick with 14:39 remaining in the first. Schwaiger capped of the 6-0 run by the Bearcats as the team led 8-1.
 
Thiel scored its second goal of the game and cut the deficit to six.
 
However, Saint Vincent went on another run with Kloos scoring her second of the game. Rachel Belles followed with her first goal of the contest with an assist from Maura Hevey. At the 8:08 mark, Smith scored for the fourth time in the first half. Just 46 seconds later, Schwaiger also scored her fourth of the half and extend the lead to 12-2.
 
The Tomcats scored once more before Smith scored once more. Thiel netted to more goals before the half as it still trailed 13-5 at the break.
 
In the second half, Kloos opened the scoring just a 1:37 in to complete the hat trick. Thiel answered with a goal of its own, but the Bearcats lead was still eight (14-6). 
 
Kloos netted her second of the half and fourth of the contest. Smith followed with two more goals to extend the lead to 17-6 and enforce a running clock.
 
The Tomcats added another goal but still trailed by double digits. 

Hevey then scored two goals-in-a-row followed by a goal from Kloos to give SVC its largest lead of the game, 13. 
 
Thiel scored once more with 11:26 left in regulation.
 
Burk then scored another coast-to-coast goal to give the Bearcats their final total of 21. The Tomcats netted the final goal but fell by the 12-goal margin.
 
Smith led the team with seven goals, a single game career-high, and collected two assists. Kloos contributed five goals and an assist to the victory.
 
Emily Ramous started in goal for Thiel while Maria Franey received the nod in net for the Bearcats. 
 
With the win, Saint Vincent is now 3-7, 3-3 in the PAC and is tied for fourth in the standings as the team holds the tiebreaker. SVC wraps up the regular season on Saturday, April 27 at Chatham University. Game starts at 3:00 p.m.
