The Saint Vincent men's tennis team lost a hard-fought battle with the Grove City College Wolverines in the Presidents' Athletic Conference semifinals, by a score of 5-4.

Grove City captured the first point of the day, winning the #3 doubles match by a score of 8-6.  The match was evened at 1-1 when
Mauricio Sanchez and
Zach Fox came from behind to win the #2 doubles match by a score of 8-6.

In the #1 doubles match, the SVC tandem of
Jon Oskin and
Ryan Hartz fell behind early, but stormed back to take a 7-4 lead.  However, their opponents then won the next three points, tying the match at 7-7 and sending it to a tiebreaker.  Oskin and Hartz prevailed in the tiebreaker by a score of 7-4, giving the Bearcats a 2-1 advantage in the match as it headed to singles play.

Sanchez put SVC in front 3-1 with a straight set win in the #2 singles match, but a Wolverine win in #1 singles closed the gap to one, 3-2. Â

Josh Boland then returned the lead to the SVC side just a few minutes later, with a 6-0, 7-5 win at #6 singles, putting SVC up 4-2 and in need of just one more victory.

After a straight-set win for Grove City at #5 singles made the score 4-3, the outcome of the match depended upon the #3 and #4 singles matches.  Both matches ended up with a split after the first two sets, forcing a tiebreaking third set.

Both sets ended up in favor of the Wolverines, giving them a 5-4 match victory, advancing them to the PAC Championship against Washington & Jefferson College.

The Bearcats will play in the consolation match on Saturday (April 27) against Bethany College.  The match will be held at W&J at 11AM.Â

Saint Vincent is now 12-4 on the season.
