The Saint Vincent women's basketball team faced Washington and Jefferson College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference road game. After gaining a lead midway through the first period, the Bearcats went on to win, 75-60. Saint Vincent moves to 13-5 on the year with a PAC record of 8-0 while the Presidents fall to 10-7 overall and 5-4 in the conference.
Wash. & Jeff. opened the scoring but
Kayla Slovenec answered with a three to give Saint Vincent a 3-2 edge. Both teams traded baskets until
Jenna Lafko made two free throws followed by a jumper from
Madison Kollar in the paint. The Presidents eventually tied the game at 13 with 58 seconds to go in the first. The Bearcats ended the period on a 5-0 run with a three-point play from Lafko as SVC led 18-13 going to the second.
Bri Van Volkenburg continued the run for Saint Vincent with a fastbreak layup but Wash. & Jeff. made two free throws to cut the lead back to five.
Stephanie Vaughn gave the Bearcats their largest lead with a three to make the score 23-15 at the 8:43 mark. SVC held the eight point edge until the Presidents scored six-straight to cut the deficit to two (25-23).
After exchanging baskets, Wash. & Jeff. hit a three to cut the difference to one but Slovenec stole the ball and made a layup with two seconds to go on the clock. Saint Vincent led 31-28 as the game headed to halftime.
The second half began with the Presidents being called for a team technical as Kollar made both free throws. Wash. & Jeff. cut the lead to one (33-32)Â after consecutive layups at the 8:29 mark. The Bearcats then scored seven-straight with five points being scored by Slovenec. The Presidents cut the deficit to four after two threes and a layup from Van Volkenburg. Saint Vincent eventually regained its eight-point lead (46-38) with 4:06 on the clock.
Wash. & Jeff. brought the hosts with six but Slovenec made two free throws followed by a three from Vaughn. The Presidents hit a three with 25 seconds left in the third and trailed 51-43 going to the final period of regulation.Â
Saint Vincent opened the final period with a Lafko layup to go up by its largest lead of the game (10). Wash. & Jeff. scored seven of the next nine points to trail 55-50 with 8:40 left on the clock. Lafko ended the mini run with a three to kick off a run for the Bearcats. SVC scored six more points after the three and led 64-50 at the 5:47 mark.Â
The Presidents cut the edge to 10 but Lafko scored five-straight to give Saint Vincent a 69-54 lead. Wash. & Jeff. pulled back within 11 but the Bearcats regained their 15-point advantage and held on for the 75-60 win.Â
Lafko finished the game 21 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Kollar added 20 points while Slovenec added 12 points. SVC scored 28 points on the fastbreak and 23 points off turnovers.
Saint Vincent travels to Grove City College on Wednesday, Jan. 29 to face the Wolverines. Start time is 5:30 p.m.
