SVC hosts Golden Tornadoes

The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team welcomed the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes to the Carey Center. The Bearcats fell in straight sets, 3-0. Saint Vincent falls to 0-4 on the season while Geneva improves to 5-4 on the year.

Geneva opened the match by winning the first five points. The Bearcats were able to win points in between runs by the Golden Tornadoes but Geneva held a strong lead. The visitors held on to win the set, 25-9.

In the second set, both teams exchanged the lead until Saint Vincent took a 8-6 lead and later, 11-9. Geneva won the next three points to regain the lead but SVC kept tying the score every time the visitors took a one-point advantage. The Golden Tornadoes eventually took a 19-15 lead but the Bearcats slowly battled back and evened the score at 21. 

Geneva won three of the next four points to go ahead 24-22. Facing set point, Saint Vincent won the point but did not tie the score and fell, 25-22.

The third began with the Golden Tornadoes grabbing a 5-3 edge while SVC came back and took the lead, 6-5. Geneva regained the lead but it was short lived as the Bearcats went back out ahead, 9-8. Saint Vincent extended the lead to three (14-11) but the Golden Tornadoes took 10 of the next 14 to go in front, 21-18.

The Bearcats pulled within two but Geneva won four of the final five points to win the set, 25-20 and the match, 3-0.

Mitchell Niderstros led the SVC offense with 14 kills while Gage McCracken added 10 kills. Niderstros also led the defense with eight digs while Matthew Furrer contributed seven on the evening.

Saint Vincent hosts Penn State-Altoona on Thursday, Feb. 6 in the Robert S. Carey Student Center. Start time is 7 p.m.
