Bearcats defeat the Saints in Virginia


The Saint Vincent College men's lacrosse team made the trek to Arlington, Virginia to face the Saints of Marymount. The Bearcats defeated the Saints, 10-6.

Alec Richard scored the first goal of the game off a pass from Tyler Condrasky at the 9:00 mark. Marymount tied the score at one with 1:28 remaining in the first period. With the score even at one, the Saints took its first lead of the day with a goal 3:25 into the second period. The hosts increased its lead to two (3-1) with a man-up goal just 55 seconds later.

Zach Novelli cut the deficit to one (3-2) at the 8:38 mark as Matthew Cassidy picked up an assist. Marymount answered 1:30 later to go ahead 4-2. With 2:57 remaining in the second period, Caleb Hawkins scored to pull the Bearcats within one (4-3). Over two minutes later, Max Schuler tied the game at four with a helper from Richard. At the break, both teams were tied at four.

In the second half, Jacob Visalli gave SVC a 5-4 lead as he scored a man-up goal 37 seconds into the period. The Saints evened the score at five but the Bearcats eventually grabbed a strong hold of the game. Novelli scored to give Saint Vincent the lead back before Jordan Billet netted a pass from Nate Salera just a minute later. Up 7-5, Hawkins scored his second goal of the game to make the score 8-5 as the game went to the fourth period. 

In the final period, Salera added a goal to his stat line at the 13:18 mark before Novelli completed the hat trick 6:00 left in regulation as Hawkins picked up an assist. Marymount scored in the final seconds but Saint Vincent won by the four-goal margin.

Novelli led the team with three goals as Hawkins (2G, 1A) and Richard (1G, 2A) finished with three points as well. Jake Lex corralled nine ground balls while Broderick McMahon tallied five ground balls and forced three turnovers. Noah Sperling picked up the win in net as he made 11 saves on the day while Brandon Hall was charged with the loss for the Saints.

Saint Vincent improves to 2-1 on the season and will host Hood College on Saturday, March 7. Start time is 1 p.m.
