Bearcats score 3 in the 11th to win, 6-5

The Bearcat baseball team rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 11th inning to defeat Aurora University by a score of 6-5 in Auburndale, Florida.

The Spartans scored a pair of runs in the top of the 11th, but Saint Vincent, after the first two batters of the inning left the team with two outs, came back to plate three runs to win the game.  Shane Fajt started the rally with a single to center, then Tim Beimel hit a ground ball to third that appeared to be a game-ender.  However, the throw from third sailed high, putting runners at second and third.  Zack VonStein hit a sharp grounder back at the mound that caromed off the pitcher for an infield single, scoring Fajt to make it 5-4.

Johnny Daggs then came in to pinch-run for VonStein as Jordan Sabol stepped to the plate.  Sabol, facing a 3-2 count, hit a sharp single to right center that easily scored Beimel to tie the game.  Sabol took a wide turn around first and got caught between first and second as the throw toward third was cut off.  The third baseman threw to first, catching Sabol in a rundown.  The Aurora players focused on the rundown, taking their eyes off Daggs, who scored uncontested from third for the winning run. Colin Parks (1-0) earned the win in relief, getting SVC out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the 11th.

Back in the beginning of the game, Aurora opened the scoring the top of the first with a single to right center that scored a run. The Bearcats quickly tied the game at one as Nate Roebuck had a base knock to left field to bring home Zach Barberich. Both starting pitchers began to find their grooves as either squad was held scoreless over the next four innings.

In the top of the sixth, the Spartans scored two runs on three hits but left three runners on base as they took a 3-1 lead. Just like in the first inning, SVC answered in the bottom half. TJ Dailey singled in the second at-bat followed by another single, this time off the bat of Brady Duricko. Duricko was then pinch ran for by Jimmy Wheeler as Wheeler and Dailey advanced on a wild pitch. Fajt hit a ground ball to third but this gave Dailey the opportunity to score as Wheeler ended up on third. The junior then scored on a wild pitch to even the score at three.

Sabol finished the day going 2-3 from the plate while driving in the tying and game-winning runs in the 11th. Casey Jones started on the mound for the Bearcats as he went six innings allowing three runs on six hits and striking out six in the no decision.

Saint Vincent (2-0) faces Emerson College on Tuesday in Auburndale, Florida. Start time is 10 a.m.
