Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Bearcat men host Bethany

LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 12) - The Saint Vincent men's soccer team was defeated 2-0 by Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Bethany College at UPMC Field.

The teams traded shots over the opening seven minutes, before the Bearcats had a number of chances over the 10-minute span to pot the game's first goal. In the 14th minute, Giuseppe Loiacono's blasted a free kick on target from 20 yards out, but Bison keeper Adis Salihovic gobbled it up. Five minutes later, Salihovic saved an attempt by SVC's Andres Mateos Carrion, before denying a shot from Cris White from point-blank range at the 24:55 mark.

Bethany upped the offensive pressure over the final 10 minutes of the first half. In the 38th minute, Bearcat keeper Zachary Gibbons charged out of his goal to deny a breakaway attempt. The save led to a Bethany corner kick, which resulted in another Gibbons save up close. The Bison continued to pin the Bearcats in deep, with two corner kicks and three shots between the 40th and 42nd minutes, before the visitors finally found the board with just 20 seconds left in the half when Salvador Issler's shot deflected off of an SVC defender and into the net to make it 1-0.

The Bison kept the momentum coming out of the break and doubled up their lead on a breakaway goal by Jayzeba Jones at the 53-minute mark.

Bethany's defense would then keep the Saint Vincent offense at bay, limiting the Bearcats to just two second half shots and no corner kicks, to preserve the win.

Saint Vincent totaled seven shots for the match, with Loiacono, White, Mateos Carrion and Cory Northrup accounting for the team's three shots on goals. Gibbons started in goal and made three saves over the first 45 minutes, before Piper played the second half in net and made two saves.

The Bearcats will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 16, when they travel to Geneva College for a 7 p.m. PAC match.
