LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 12) - The Saint Vincent women's soccer team snapped a three-game losing skid with a convincing 3-0 win over the visiting Bethany Bison in a Presidents' Athletic Conference match at UPMC Field.
The Bearcats (5-7, 2-3 PAC) controlled play throughout the match, out-shooting the Bison (4-8, 0-5 PAC) by a 20-10 margin.
Bethany had the first two scoring chances of the afternoon, with SVC keeper
Madison Arnold turning aside a pair of shots in the 10th minute, before SVC took control. The hosts nearly scored the game's first goal in the 20th minute, as
Tanisha Grewal hit the post directly off of a
Hannah Irvine corner kick, before the follow-up shot by
Catherine Dzikowski was blocked by a defender in front.
After the two teams contested most of the middle 15 minutes in the neutral third of the field, the Bearcats again turned up the offense over the final stages of the half. With just under seven minutes left, Irvine sent SVC's third corner kick of the frame into traffic in front.
Abigail Stewart took the first crack at it, with her shot blocked, but
Gina Aiello was right there to knock home the rebound and give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead with 6:45 left.Â
The Bearcats would post two more shots over the final five minutes of the half, but one was blocked and the other saved, and the game would remain 1-0 at the intermission.Â
Coming out of halftime, Saint Vincent wasted little time in adding onto its lead, as Grewal controlled a loose ball in front and scored her 12th goal of the season at the 47:11 mark.Â
Just four minutes later, Grewal would score her second of the game on a high, arching shot from 30 yards out to push the SVC lead to 3-0.Â
Following Grewal's second strike, the Bison upped their offensive pressure, as they were awarded two corner kicks in an 80-second span. The first corner kick led to a blocked shot, while the second ended with Arnold making her third save of the game to keep Bethany off the board with 26:10 left in regulation.
From there, the Bearcats regained control, only allowing two more shots over the game's final 23 minutes to close out the win.
Arnold played all 90 minutes in goal to earn her second shutout win of the season, finishing with four saves. Nine players accounted for Saint Vincent's 20 shots, led by Grewal, who finished with nine.
The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 16, when they travel to Beaver County for a 5 p.m. match against PAC foe Geneva College.Â
