NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Oct. 12) – The Saint Vincent women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision at Presidents' Athletic Conference leader Westminster College on Tuesday night.
Set scores were 25-21, 25-10 and 25-19.
In the opening set, the Bearcats looked to be in control early, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead. After the Titans battled back to tie it at 4-4, the Bearcats erupted for a 7-1 run, highlighted by an
Olivia Persin ace and back-to-back kills by
Caitlyn Figuly, to jump in front 11-5. Westminster would then gradually chip away at the deficit, eventually forging a 15-15 tie. The Titans kept the momentum and scored five of the next six points to open up a 20-16 lead. A kill from
Vivian Poach temporarily halted the run, but the Bearcats were unable to pull any closer than three points the rest of the way and the Titans took the set 25-21.
Westminster stormed out of the gates to start the second set, opening up a quick 10-2 lead. A kill from
Luciana Polk, followed by aces on back-to-back serves by
Lindsey Kocjancic, would cut the SVC gap to 10-5, but the Titans answered with an 11-2 run to open up a 21-7 lead and seal the set win.
The two squads traded points over the first six serves of the second set before the Titans scored 10 unanswered to open up a 13-3 lead. The Bearcats looked to chip away, with kills from
Jessica Hughes,
Carly Augustine and Polk cutting the gap to 15-8, before three straight Westminster attack errors brought the Bearcats to within 18-13. After the Titans scored three straight to go up 21-13, the Bearcats again pulled to within striking distance after a pair of Titan errors and a Figuly kill again made it a five-point game, 21-16. The Bearcats answered the Titans point-for-point down the stretch, but could not put together another run, as Westminster sealed the 3-0 victory with a 25-19 set win.
Augustine led the Bearcats with five kills, while adding three blocks. Kocjancic led the Bearcats with two aces and four blocks, while Persin finished with a team-best 16 digs and Polk and
Madie Marsico 11 apiece.
Saint Vincent will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 16, traveling to Geneva College for a 1 p.m. PAC match.
