BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Oct. 16) - The Saint Vincent women's volleyball team was defeated 3-1 by Geneva in a Presidents' Athletic Conference Saturday matinee.
After SVC took the opening set by a 25-22 score, the Golden Tornadoes roared back to take the next three by scores of 25-14, 29-27 and 25-20 to take the match.
Carly Augustine tallied her 11th double-double of the season, posting 14 digs and 15 assists along with a team-high nine kills.
Luciana Polk added seven kills and
Caitlyn Figuly six.
Madie Marsico led led SVC's defense with 22 digs, with Polk adding 19 and
Olivia Persin 11. Persin also had 16 assists and a pair of aces, while
Nikki Friendshuh served a trio of aces in the loss.
Lindsey Kocjancic led the Bearcats at the net, tallying four blocks (one solo), with Figuly and
Becca Miller adding two blocks each.
The first set of the afternoon was back and forth to start. The Bearcats held a slight advantage at 11-9 before they went on a run, scoring the next five points to take a 16-9 advantage. Geneva responded by scoring the next four to cut the Bearcats lead to 16-13, before the Bearcats countered with a 5-1 run to take a commanding 21-14 lead. The Golden Tornadoes then scored seven of the next nine points but still trailed Saint Vincent 23-21. The Bearcats closed it out scoring two of the last three, ending the set with a kill by Kocjancic to win the set 25-22.
The second set belonged to Geneva. The Bearcats hung around in the early portion of the set before the Golden Tornadoes pulled way, eventually opening up a 17-10 advantage before ending on an 8-4 run to take the set 25-14 and even up the match at 1-1.
The third set was the tightest of the day. The teams went back and forth early on, and Geneva held a slight 7-5 advantage. The Golden Tornadoes went on to score eight of the next 12 to take a 15-9 advantage. Geneva then tried to pull away in the set as they took a 20-15 lead. The Bearcats would not go away. They scored the next four points to cut the Golden Tornadoes lead to 20-19. The teams traded the next couple of points, but the Bearcats tied the set up at 22-22. The teams traded the next few points as the set was tied at 26-26. Geneva took control from this point on. The Golden Tornadoes scored three of the last four to win the set 29-27 and go up in the match 2-1.
In the fourth set, the back-and-forth theme continued. The teams traded the first eight points as the set was tied 4-4. The set continued to go back and forth as neither team could sustain a lead. The set was tied 17-17, before the GTs outscored SVC 8-3 down the stretch to take the set, 25-20, and the match, 3-1.
The Bearcats be back in action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19, when they return home to take on Grove City in a PAC matchup in the Robert S. Carey Center.
