Women's volleyball tops Waynesburg in four

LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 21) – Behind a balanced effort, the Saint Vincent women's volleyball team snapped a two-match losing skid with a 3-1 win over visiting Waynesburg University in the Robert S. Carey Student Center.

Set scores were 25-16, 25-18, 22-25 and 25-10.

Four different players recorded at least seven kills, led by 13 from Becca Miller and 11 from Caitlyn Figuly. Lindsey Kocjancic and Luciana Polk each finished with seven kills. Kocjancic, who hit .400 for the evening, also had a big night at the net for SVC, posting six blocks (three solo), while Figuly tallied three.

As was the case offensively, the Bearcats also put forth a team effort on defense, with six different players reaching double figures in digs, paced by 22 from Polk and 20 from Olivia Persin. Stacie Ramos and Carly Augustine each picked up 17, while Madie Marsico added 11 and Nikki Friendshuh 10. Augustine and Persin shared the setting duties, with the former handing out 19 assists and the latter 15, while Polk, Friendshuh and Ramos each served two aces.

In the night's opening set, the teams traded points over the first six serves, before a Kocjancic kill started a 3-0 run that pushed SVC in front, 6-3. A kill from Miller made it 7-4 and kick started a 7-1 run, which also included an ace from Friendshuh, a block by Polk and Kocjancic and two kills by Vivian Poach, to extend the lead to 14-5. The Yellow Jackets battled back to eventually pull to within five, 16-11, but after a pair of Miller kills made it 19-11, the Bearcats scored six of the final 11 points of the set, punctuated with Figuly's kill that sealed the 25-16 win.

Waynesburg opened the second set with a 5-3 lead, but the Bearcats would storm back to tie it at 6-6, with four of SVC's points coming on swings from Miller. Polk then put down kills on back-to-back rallies to push SVC in front 8-7, before SVC's lead grew to 14-10 on Miller's fifth kill of the set. The Yellow Jakckets countered by scoring six of the next eight points to trim the deficit to 17-16, but following a time out, SVC charged back to score five straight points, with a Friendshuh ace and kills from Poach and Polk, to open up a 21-16 advantage. The Bearcats would then score four of the set's final six points, with Persin's ace closing out the 25-18 win.

Set number three was tight in the early going, with seven ties and seven lead changes enroute to an 8-8 tie. Waynesburg then scored five unanswered points to take a 13-8 lead and maintained an advantage between three and five points over the next several serves. Trailing 23-17, the Bearcats looked to charge back, using a kill from Figuly, two from Miller, and a Ramos service ace to pull to within 24-22. SVC was unable to extend the set, however, with Waynesburg closing it out at 25-22.

The fourth set belonged to Saint Vincent from the start, as the Bearcats raced out to a 10-1 lead and never looked back. Augustine had three kills and Polk two aces over SVC's first 10 points. After a Waynesburg point, SVC went right back to work, upping its lead to 16-3 after a kill from Poach and an ace from Augustine. The spread would eventually grow to 20-5 follow kills from Kocjancic and Poach, before a mini Waynesburg run closed the gap to 23-10. Ramos halted the Waynesburg surge with her second ace of the evening to make it 24-10, before Kocjancic ended the night with an emphatic kill to give SVC the 25-10 set win, and 3-1 match victory.

With the win, the Bearcats improve to 8-13 overall and 5-9 in PAC play, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 7-17 overall and 3-13 in league play. The victory was Saint Vincent's 33rd straight over Waynesburg.

The Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 23, with a tri-match at Thiel College. SVC takes on host Thiel at 1 p.m., followed by a non-conference bout with Capital University at 3 p.m.
