PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Oct. 26) – The Saint Vincent women's volleyball team was defeated in three sets by Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Chatham University.
Set scores were 26-24, 25-20 and 25-16.
Carly Augustine led the Bearcats with nine kills, with
Jessica Hughes adding four and
Caitlyn Figuly three. Figuly also topped SVC with two blocks, both solo, while
Stacie Ramos and
Luciana Polk tied for team-high honors with 11 digs apiece.
Sara Ellis narrowly missed the double-double, recording a team-leading 11 assists to go with eight digs.
Figuly's first block of the evening gave the Bearcats the first point of the first set, and SVC would maintain a lead between one and two points over the next several rallies. The Cougars would eventually tie it at 7-all, before a pair of Chatham errors sandwiched by an Augustine kill lifted the Bearcats to a 10-7 advantage. The Cougars would then put together a surge, embarking on a 6-0 run to go up 14-11. Augustine would then put down two kills to highlight a 3-0 run and force a 14-14 tie, but the Cougars answered right back to jump back in front 17-14. SVC chipped away at the deficit, with kills from Hughes,
Lindsey Kocjancic and Figuly again pulling the Bearcats to within one at 20-19. Moments later, the Bearcats would tie it at 23 on a Chatham error and a Figuly kill, before another Chatham error gave SVC a 24-23 and set point. The visitors were unable to close it out, though, with the Cougars scoring the final two points to claim a 26-24 win.
Chatham got off to a hot start in the second set, jumping out to leads of 3-0, 6-3 and 8-4. The Bearcats regrouped, quickly pulling to within 8-6 after kills from Kocjancic and Poach, before another Poach kill tied the set at 10-10. The Cougars would then erupt for nine of the next 10 points to take a commanding 19-11 lead. The Bearcats refused to go away, embarking on a lengthy run of their own. An ace from Polk followed by an Augustine kill pulled the visitors to within four, 19-15, before a pair of Chatham errors and a kill from Hughes made it a two-point game, 20-18. The Bearcats would get no closer, though, as Chatham ended the set on a 5-2 run to close out the 25-20 set victory.
Behind kills from Polk and Hughes, the Bearcats jumped out to a 4-3 lead to open the third set, before Chatham erupted on a 10-3 run to jump in front 13-6. The next two points went to SVC to trim the gap to five, but the Cougars would then take charge by opening up a 21-11 lead. SVC would eventually pull to within seven, 21-14, after an Augustine ace and a
Kaelyn Staples kill, but the large early deficit was too much for the Bearcats to overcome, with Chatham taking the set by a 25-16 score to close the match.
The Bearcats will now prep for the 2021 home finale, as they will take on Bethany College on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Robert S. Carey Center. On Senior Night in the Carey Center, the three four-year members of the team, including Ellis, Figuly and
Brittany Boehm, will be honored for their careers in the Green and Gold.
