Bearcats edged in PAC road match

WASHINGTON, Pa. - Host Washington & Jefferson scored the eventual game-winning goal 11 minutes into the second half to hand Saint Vincent a 1-0 defeat in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Alexandre Stadium.

The loss is Saint Vincent's second straight and drops the Bearcats to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the PAC. Washington & Jefferson improves to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

The Bearcats had the better of the play throughout the first half, doubling up the Presidents in shots by a 10-5 margin. SVC had a number of sustained possessions deep inside its offensive zone, but were unable to convert, despite sending six of its 10 shots on goal. Tanesha Grewal led all players with three first half shots, while SVC keeper Kendall Castor kept W&J off the board by making two saves.

W&J took control of play coming out of the intermission, tallying four shots in the first nine minutes of the second half. On the third one, the Presidents found pay dirt, with Katie Hahn scoring off of a breakaway in the game's 54th minute to put the hosts up 1-0.

Following the go-ahead goal, the Presidents went into a defensive mode. While the Bearcats had a number of possessions inside their offensive half of the field, the Presidents quelled any threats to hold on to the win. The Presidents limited the Bearcats to just four second half shots, while SVC was not granted a corner kick over the final 45 minutes.

The teams ended up even in both shots (14) and corner kicks (2) for the evening. Grewal notched four of SVC's 14 attempts, while Lucia Johnson and Hannah Irvine totaled three apiece.

Castor ended the evening with a total of seven saves.

Saint Vincent will now travel to Steubenville, Ohio, to face Franciscan University on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 3 p.m.
