Despite an incredible performance from
Shemar Bennett with 26 points and 19 rebounds, the Bearcats were unable to get the job done. Saint Vincent fell to Bethany in overtime, in a Presidents Athletic Conference matchup, 91-88.
To start the game, Saint Vincent (2-6, 2-6) came out firing with 10 of the first 13 points. That lead was quickly erased as Bethany (1-6, 1-6) hit a couple of three pointers to take the lead. From then on, it was a back-and-forth game with the lead changing eight different times.
The half ended with the Bison leading by a score of 41-37. Bennett had a near double-double in the first half with 12 points and eight rebounds. The Bison shot an impressive 58.8-percent (10-17) from behind the arc in the first half.
To begin the second half, Bethany shot very well and grew its lead to 12 points. The Bearcats kept fighting and with six straight points by
Arguel Drotleff the lead was cut to eight. The Bison then extended the lead to 12 (78-66) with about 4 minutes in regulation. Saint Vincent then came roaring back with 14 unanswered points to take a two-point lead (80-78).
Osyon Jones had two clutch free throws to tie the game at 78.
Nelson Etuk had a big layup to give the Bearcats the lead.
Walter Bonds converted a free throw to give the Bearcats a three-point lead with about 20 seconds to go. The Bison then hit a buzzer beater three-pointer to send the game to overtime.
To start overtime, the teams exchanged baskets until Bethany hit some big free throws to grow its lead to 89-86. Bennett then hit a big fade away layup to cut the lead to one point. The Bison responded with two free throws to increase the lead back to three. The Bearcats then missed a chance to tie it at the buzzer, as Bethany held on to win the game by a score of 91-88.
Etuk joined Bennett in the double-double club with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jones added another 18 points in the effort. The Bison had six different scorers in double digits with Dalton Hamrick leading the way with 18 points.
Saint Vincent will rest up until its final game of the regular season at Westminster College on Saturday, March 6. Tip-off will be at 1:30 p.m.
