SVC opens homefield play


The Saint Vincent College softball team hosted the Washington & Jefferson Presidents for a non-conference doubleheader. The Bearcats won the first game 14-6 and tied in game two, 13-13.

Game 1 - SVC 14, W&J 6 (6 Inn.)

The Presidents opened the scoring in the opening frame with two runs on two hits. Saint Vincent cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second when Hanna Pavsek singled to right field, plating Jessica LaPorte. 

The score remained 2-1 in favor of W&J until the fourth inning when the Bearcats exploded for eight runs on five hits to take a 9-2 lead. The Presidents responded in the top of the fifth as they scored four runs on six hits but SVC had an answer of its own.

Saint Vincent added four more runs capitalizing on mistakes made by W&J to take a 13-6 advantage. The Bearcats closed out the game in the sixth as Olivia Persin singled through the left side to score Shea Robson.

Taylor LaVale with a perfect 4-4 from the plate with two RBI and scoring once. Persin and Abbey Ginter both finished two hits in the first game. Haley Bicko went the distance, giving up six runs on 10 hits and striking out three.

Game 2 - SVC 13, W&J 13

W&J opened the second game as it did in the first, scoring the opening run in the first. The Presidents doubled its lead in the second and then in fourth to take a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Saint Vincent exploded for six runs on five hits including a double by Kelsey Tobin down the left field line to score two. The lead was short lived as W&J hit two two-run homers in the top of the fifth to claim an 8-6 lead. In the sixth, the visitors added five more runs to their lead (13-6).

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bearcats went on a hitting barrage to score five runs on eight hits to pull within two (13-11). After forcing a three-and-out, Saint Vincent battled three outs and fading light to tie or win the game. With one out, Jessica Persin doubled down the left field line as Ginter scored from second.

In the next at-bat, Johnna Karas hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Mackenzie Larimer. Saint Vincent was unable to plate another and due to the fading light, the game was called at 13 all after seven innings.

Ginter finished the game 3-5 from the plate with two runs and a run batted in. Karas tallied two hits, runs and runs batted in during the game. Assalone pitched all seven innings, allowing 13 runs (11 earned) on 16 hits. 

Saint Vincent (2-3-1) travels to Waynesburg University on Saturday, March 20. Game one starts at 1 p.m.
