Softball faces the Yellow Jackets

The Saint Vincent College softball team hit the road for a non-conference doubleheader against Waynesburg University. The Bearcats were swept by the Yellow Jackets, 5-4 and 7-0.

Game 1 - Waynesburg 5, Saint Vincent 4

Waynesburg started the game off strong, with two quick runs in the first inning. The bats quieted down after the first as each team did not score in the second or third innings.
 
The bats came alive for the Bearcats in the fourth inning as junior Abbey Ginter hit a solo homerun to lead off the inning, cutting the Yellow Jackets lead to just one (2-1). The Bearcats threatened as they compiled three hits in the inning but left two on base, keeping the score 2-1.
 
The Bearcats held Waynesburg scoreless in the bottom half of the fourth, and Waynesburg held the Bearcats scoreless in the top half of the fifth.
 
Waynesburg broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth as they scored four runs giving them a 5-1 advantage heading to the sixth inning.
 
With two outs in the sixth, Johnna Karas reached on error as Kelsey Tobin scored, cutting the lead to 5-2. After Karas advanced to second on the error, freshman Taylor LaVale hit a RBI single scoring Karas cutting the Waynesburg lead to 5-3 heading to the bottom of the sixth.
 
The Bearcats set the Yellow Jackets down in order in the bottom half of the sixth and trailed by two heading to the seventh (5-3).

Shae Robson led the seventh inning off with a single to center and Jessica Persin laid down a sacrifice bunt to get Robson to second with just one out. Ginter doubled in Robson to cut the Waynesburg lead to 5-4 but, it was not quite enough as the next two batters grounded out to give Waynesburg the 5-4 win.
 
Robson went 3-4 and scored one run for the Bearcats at the top of the lineup. Ginter went 2-4 with two RBI's and one run scored.
 
Game 2 - Waynesburg 7, Saint Vincent 0

Waynesburg controlled from start to finish. The hosts got off to an early 3-0 in the first inning and the Bearcats never recovered.
 
The Bearcats kept the game in reach as it was just 4-0 after two innings. The Bearcats bats were never able to come to life in game two. The Bearcats had six hits as a team but could not bring anyone in to score.
 
Waynesburg added three more runs in the fifth inning giving them a 7-0 lead headed into the sixth.
 
The Bearcats threatened to score in the sixth, but Waynesburg kept them from crossing the plate as the Bearcats left two on the base. Similar to the sixth, Monica Gurley had a single for the Bearcats in the seventh, but it did not amount to anything, as Waynesburg completed the shutout, defeating the Bearcats 7-0 and sweeping the doubleheader.
 
Person went 2-3 for the Bearcats in the game as she had two singles. Riley Assalone took the loss for the Bearcats on the mound.
 
Saint Vincent returns home to take on Geneva College scheduled for Tuesday, March 23. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
