Behind senior
Mike Stasko, the Saint Vincent football team defeated Bethany College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference South Division contest. The Bearcats won the road contest, 35-6.
Stasko ran for 107 yards on 16 carries and scoring twice as Saint Vincent (1-1, 1-1) combined for 212 total rushing yards.
After forcing a Bethany College(0-2, 0-2) three-and-out to start the game, the Bearcats offense took the field for the first time. Despite SVC facing a third-down and seven,
Brady Walker completed a 13-yard pass to
Kaelib McElroy to keep the drive alive.
After another third-and-long conversion by Walker, the Bearcats allowed Stasko and
David Marshall Jr to lead the offense to the one-yard line. On the next play, Walker faked a handoff to Stasko and ran into the endzone for the opening score.
Jared Gonzalez made the point after to give Saint Vincent a 7-0 lead with 8:33 to go in the first.
The Bison gave the ball right back after picking up their first first-down of the game. The Bearcats started their next drive on their own 34-yard line with 6:48 to go in the first. Walker and Stasko led Saint Vincent on a 14-play, 66-yard drive capped off by a one-yard Stasko touchdown run. Another Gonzalez make doubled the SVC lead (14-0) just three seconds into the second quarter.Â
Bethany was able to pick up two first downs but a penalty stalled the drive. The penalties continued to hurt the Bison as the Bearcats benefited with two first downs as the ball was spotted on the Bethany six. After a four-yard pass, Stasko scored his second touchdown of the game to give SVC a 21-0 edge with 9:25 left in the first half.
Both teams exchanged possessions until Bethany got the ball back with 6:12 on the clock. The Bison went 54 yards in nine plays to get on the board with a 10-yard touchdown pass. The point after was no good as Saint Vincent led by 15 (21-6).
The Bearcats wasted no time in responding as Walker went 4-4 through the air with the final pass going for 30 yards to
Keith Kalp for a touchdown. The point after gave SVC a 28-6 lead with 1:04 left in the half. Saint Vincent's defense forced another three-and-out as the offense took a knee to send both teams to their respective locker rooms.
Saint Vincent received the opening kick of the second half as the offense looked to carry the momentum from the first half. On fourth-and-one, Walker found Kalp for seven yards to keep the drive going. On second down, Stasko burst through the line for a 22-yard gain to set up a first-and-10 from the Bethany 12.
The very next play,
Jeremy Wodarek got a 12-yard pass from Walker for the score. The Bearcats increased its advantage and held a 35-6 lead at the 8:30 mark.
After both teams punted on their next drives, Bethany looked to add to its score. Starting on their own nine, the Bison found its way to the SVC five after 12 plays. Once again, the Bearcat defense stood tall and forced a turnover on downs at the 11-yard line.
Saint Vincent punted on its next drive, giving Bethany one last chance. After plays of 30 and 27 yards, the Bison found its way into the endzone but another penalty nullified the score. SVC stood tall once again and forced another turnover on downs.
The Bearcats used 12 plays to close out the final 8:27 and win by the 29-point margin.
Walker finished the day going 15 for 20, 139 yards and two touchdowns. Kalp reeled in six receptions for 76 yards and a score. Defensively, the Bearcats held the Bison under 300-total yards while forcing seven punts and two turnovers on downs.
Saint Vincent return to Chuck Noll Field on Saturday, April 10 for a South Division tilt against Washington & Jefferson College. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
