On Saturday afternoon, the Saint Vincent Bearcats (5-1) defeated the Chatham Cougars (2-3) at UPMC Field by a score of 11-9.
Saint Vincent jumped out to an early lead, taking advantage of a penalty by the Cougars, as
Caleb Hawkins opened the scoring for the game and the Bearcats, scoring a goal with a man advantage. Goals came back and forth between the Cougars and the Bearcats as Saint Vincent finished the first quarter with a 2-1 lead.
Chatham started the scoring in the second quarter, tying the Bearcats. A response came from Saint Vincent with a string of three goals in three minutes, taking a 5-2 lead. Chatham responded with two goals of their own. The half ended with Chatham and Saint Vincent exchanging goals. After the high scoring second frame of the contest, the score read 6-5 Saint Vincent.
Heading into the third quarter, Chatham started the scoring again, tying the game again. The Bearcats rallied back and scored 4 goals to take a commanding 10-6 lead. Chatham finished the third quarter with a goal to cut the bearcats lead to three.
Defense was big in the fourth quarter as only three goals were scored, two coming from Chatham to close the gap to one goal, and one from Saint Vincent, who sealed the game with a goal from the man who started scoring on the day Hawkins. The final score, Saint Vincent 11, Chatham 9.
Scorers on the Bearcats are as follows:
Jordan Billet (2 G, 2 A) and Hawkins (3 G, 1 A) each finished with four points on the day,
Jacob Visalli (2 G, 1 A) and
Matthew Cassidy (1 G, 2 A) finished with three points,
Alec Richards finished with two, as Zach Novelli,
Andrew Coholich, and
Max Schuler each finished with one point each.
In the cage for the Bearcats,
Caleb Bouch made 9 saves and got the win for Saint Vincent. Shane Gaglione was in the cage for Chatham and made 16 saves.
Saint Vincent is in action on Wednesday, March 31, at home to take on the Wolverines of Grove City. Face-off at 4:00 p.m.
