The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team welcomed the Chatham University Cougars for a non-conference matchup. The Bearcats survived a tightly contested game and won 9-8.
Chatham (2-1) got off to a quick start taking a 2-0 lead three minutes into the game.
Margaret Edwards got Saint Vincent (3-2) scored at the 17:40 mark. Edwards followed it with another goal, this time from
Joey Smith.
Bridget Doyle gave the Bearcats a 3-2 lead with 6:55 left in the first half but it was short lived. Just over two minutes later, the Cougars evened the game at three and the score remained this way at the break.
Saint Vincent wasted little time in the second half to grab the lead as
Hannah-Marie Starner scored with a helper from Smith.
Kaylee Bandow and Smith scored the next two goals to give SVC a 6-3 lead.
Chatham scored two of the next three goals but still trailed by two (7-5). The Bearcats added two more goals from Edwards and Doyle to lead 9-5 with 10:27 remaining in regulation.Â
However, the Cougars were not ready to go away. Bria Braddock scored a man-up goal under a minute after the Doyle goal. Three minutes later, Rachel Borucki scored to pull within two (9-7). With 1:12 to go in regulation, Chatham found the back of the net and created some drama.Â
The Cougars controled the ensuing draw and threaten to score but the Bearcat defense stood tall and did not allow a single shot and sealed the one goal win.
Smith led the team in points with four (2G, 2A) while Edwards finsihed with three goals and Doyle added another two.
Kyra Lipetzky made eight saves in the victory.
Saint Vincent hosts Waynesburg University on Thursday, April 1. Start time is 4 p.m.
