Saint Vincent hosts Westminster

The Saint Vincent College softball team hosted a double header against Westminster College. The Bearcats were swept in the double header, losing game one 8-7 and losing game two 7-4.

Game 1 - Westminster 8, Saint Vincent 7

Westminster got on the board first in the top of the second inning, on a single scoring one, giving them a 1-0 lead. The Titans added another run on a fielder's choice in the same inning, increasing their leas to 2-0.

The Bearcats answered right back in the bottom of the second. Mallory Halleck crushed a solo home run to right field. That is all the Bearcats got in the inning, as the score was 2-1 in favor of Westminster.

The Titans put three more on the board in the top of the third inning, opening their lead up to 5-1, as Saint Vincent was headed to bat in the bottom of the third.

Hannah Pavsek led the bottom of the inning off with an infield single on a bunt to third base. After a groundout, Pavsek advanced to second, bringing up Jessica Persin. After Persin singled, Abbey Ginter hit an RBI double, scoring Pavsek, and making the lead 5-2.

Saint Vincent was not done yet in the inning. Kelsey Tobin added an RBI single cutting the Titans lead to two (5-3). Kaylee Ludwick hit into a fielder's choice, also scoring a run, as the score moved to 5-4, but the Bearcats rally ended on a fly out.

Westminster was shut out in the top half of the fourth, bringing the Bearcats to hit. After a flyout, Pavsek singled, and Shae Robson reached on a fielder's choice and the Bearcats were in business with runners on first and second, with just one out.

After the fielder's choice Jess Persin stepped up to the plate again. She hit a two-RBI double, scoring both Robson and Pavsek, giving the Bearcats their first lead of the game at 6-5, and that remained the score heading to the top of the fifth.

Westminster took control of the game at this point. The Titans added a run in the top of the fifth, tying the game at six all. Then, the Titans shut out the Bearcats in the bottom half of the inning. The Titans added two more in the top of the sixth, giving them the lead 8-6.

In the bottom of the sixth the Bearcats attempted to come back. Jess Persin doubled in Alexandra Dillner, cutting the Titan lead to 8-7, but the Bearcats rally ended, and neither team scored in the seventh, giving game one to Westminster, 8-7.

Jess Persin had three hits and three RBI's in the game. Pavsek added two hits in the loss for the Bearcats.

Game 2 - Westminster 7, Saint Vincent 4

Just as they did in game one, the Titans got on the board first. This time they scored four runs in the second inning, giving them a very comfortable lead, 4-0.

Neither team was able to score in the third, keeping the score 4-0 in favor of Westminster. In the fourth the Titans continued to score more runs. They added three more, giving them a 7-0 lead.

The Bearcats attempted to come back though. Monica Gourley hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, ending the shutout and getting the Bearcats on the board, making the score 7-1, but that's all that happened for the Bearcats in the inning.

Westminster's bats went quiet and they were shut out in the fifth and sixth innings, as were the Saint Vincent bats in the fifth inning, but the sixth inning was a different story for the Bearcats.

In the sixth, the Bearcats got a few base runners on as Robson hit a double to center, scoring Monica Gourley, making the score 7-2, and that was the score at the end of the inning as well.

In the seventh, Saint Vincent shut out the Titans, giving them one last chance. After a few base runners, Dillner singled to right, scoring Halleck (7-3). Then, Mary Maceda singled to right scoring Dillner, making the score 7-4. The Bearcats rally ended, giving Westminster game two, 7-4.

Dillner and Gourley both had two hits and two RBI's a piece. Robson added a hit and RBI at the top of the lineup.

Saint Vincent (9-12-1, 3-5) hit the road and head to Washington and Jefferson for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 17. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
