The Saint Vincent College baseball team coming off three-straight wins to advance to the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship round of the tournament faced the Washington & Jefferson Presidents. The Bearcats 2021 season came to a close as they fell to the Presidents, 3-0.
W&J scored the first run of the game on a fielder's choice in the top of the first inning. After a 32 pitches, starter
Brenden Lavely brought an end to the inning with a ground ball to second base.Â
For Saint Vincent, it faced Nick Drake who found a groove early and shut down the Bearcats in order. After Presidents followed suit in the top of the second, the Bearcats stepped to the plate.
TJ Dailey was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second after a ground out from
Jayke Saiani. Unfortunately, that is as far as the senior advanced on the bases as SVC struck out to end the inning.
W&J led off the third with a walk and a stolen base to put a man on second with no outs. A fly ball to right advanced the runner to third despite a strong throw from Dailey that made the play close. A ground out to second brought home the runner and gave the Presidents a 2-0 lead.
The game remained this way until the bottom of the seventh when SVC had its best chance of the afternoon.
Matt Evans led off with a single up the middle before Dailey advanced him with a sacrifice bunt. Saiani drew a four-pitch walk with one out.
Evans and Saiani moved up 90 feet after a wild pitch as the Bearcats looked primed to get on the board. However, two strikeouts ended the threat and kept the difference at two.
In the top of the eighth, W&J added another run to its lead with a RBI single to through the right side of the infield. In the bottom half of the inning, Saint Vincent got two-out singles by
Julian Santana and
Jordan Sabol but were unable to score a run.
Both teams went down in order in the ninth as the Presidents held on for the 3-0 win and the PAC Championship.
Lavely pitched seven innings, giving up the three runs on five hits and five walks.
Matt Evans pitched the final two innings in relief, allowing three hits and striking out one.
Seniors
Tom Bash, Dailey and Evans were named to the PAC All-Tournament Team.
Saint Vincent finishes the 2021 season 17-18 overall and 13-12 in conference with reaching the PAC Championship for the first time in school history.
