Game Recap: Baseball | | Noah Aftanas, Student Writer

Baseball hosts Washington & Jefferson

The Saint Vincent baseball team played host to Washington and Jefferson College for a doubleheader on senior day. The Bearcats were swept by the Presidents, losing game one 8-3 and losing game two 2-1.

Game 1 - W&J 8, Saint Vincent 3

The Presidents threatened to score in the top of the first as they loaded the bases, but Saint Vincent pitcher Justin Wright got out of the jam without giving up a run.

The Bearcats cracked the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first. Jordan Sabol led the inning off with a double, then after a couple outs and walk, Jayke Saiani singled in Sabol to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. Saint Vincent added two more in the inning as Wright reached on an error, scoring both Saiani and TJ Dailey, making the score 3-0 headed to the second.

Neither team was able to plate a run in the second and the game headed to the third, and this is when W&J took full control of the game.

In the top of the third, the Presidents plated six runs on five hits and took advantage of one Saint Vincent error, giving them a 6-3 lead going to the bottom of the inning.

In the middle innings of the game, the pitchers for both teams took control. Neither team scored any runs in the fourth and fifth innings, as the score remained 6-3 in favor of the Presidents.

W&J added a run in the sixth, scoring a run on a fielder's choice, and continued to keep the Saint Vincent bats quiet, as they led 7-3 going to the final inning.

The Presidents plated another insurance run in the top half of the seventh, giving them an 8-3 lead and set the Bearcats down in order in the bottom of the inning, giving them an 8-3 win in game one.

Saiani had one hit, scored a run, and had one RBI for the Bearcats. Sabol added a hit at the top of the lineup and scored a run as well in the loss for Saint Vincent.

Game 2 - W&J 2, Saint Vincent 1

Game two of the doubleheader was a pitcher's duel the whole way through. A combined three runs were scored between both teams in the entire game.

Jimmy Malone started game two on the mound for the Bearcats and was in control through the first two innings as he didn't give up a run, but the Bearcats offense could not crack the scoreboard either, as the game was tied 0-0 headed to the third inning.

W&J struck first in the third inning as they used a sacrifice fly that scored a run to give them a 1-0 lead, and that's all they would get in the inning as Malone kept the Presidents bats silent.

Both teams were silent in the third and fourth innings, as the Bearcats went down in order in both innings, as Washington and Jefferson remained in the lead (1-0). In the top of the fourth, the Presidents threatened to score but Malone shut them down as he did most of the game.

The Saint Vincent offense woke up in the bottom of the fourth, as they plated a run to tie the game at one all. With two outs in the inning, Wright reached on an error, and Ben Menarchek singled him in to tie the game, but that would be it for the Bearcats in the inning.

The Presidents answered right back in the top of the sixth, as they plated what would be the game winning run to regain the lead at 2-1.

Saint Vincent threatened to score a couple of times in the later part of the game as they had baserunners on, but were unable to plate any runs, as W&J won game two, 2-1.

Jimmy Malone picked up the loss on the mound, going nine strong innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on nine hits, and struck out two. Menarchek had a hit and an the lone RBI in game two for the Bearcats.

Saint Vincent returns to the diamond and heads to Washington, PA for the regular season finale doubleheader against Washington and Jefferson on Sunday, May 9. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
