LATROBE, Pa (Oct. 5)- The Saint Vincent women's volleyball team played host to La Roche in a non-conference in the Robert S. Carey Center, where the Bearcats came away with a 3-0 sweep of the Red Hawks.
The set scores were 25-13, 25-20, and 25-19.
Carly Augustine led the way for the Bearcats with a triple double with 14 kills, 13 assists, and 14 digs. Augustine also was also the team leader with two aces and two blocks.
Luciana Polk added 13 kills, 21 digs, and four assists for SVC.
Kaelyn Staples had seven kills and
Vivian Poach recorded a team-high 19 assists.
In the first set, it was all Saint Vincent. The Bearcats got off to a quick 5-1 lead in the set and increased their lead to nine at 13-4 by the middle portion of the set. Saint Vincent continued their pressure to the Red Hawks as they increased their lead to 10 at 19-9. SVC went on to score six of the final ten points, taking the 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set was much tighter than the first set. The Bearcats opened up to an early 6-3 lead, but La Roche wouldn't go away. The Red Hawks tied the set up at 8-8 and the teams traded the next several points as the set was again tied, this time at 17-17.
La Roche then went on a quick 3-0 run, taking the lead at 20-17. Saint Vincent once again upped the pressure, scoring the final eight points to win the set, and take the 2-0 advantage in the match.
SVC once again controlled the early portions of the third set, destined for the 3-0 sweep. The Bearcats held an early 5-1 lead but La Roche responded. The Red Hawks scored eight of the next nine points, taking a 9-6 lead in the set.
Once again, the teams traded the next couple of points, as La Roche remained in the lead at 11-8. Saint Vincent went on a quick 6-0 run to regain the lead at 14-11. The Red Hawks battled the Bearcats in the last points of the set in an effort to force a fourth set, but Saint Vincent prevailed, outscoring La Roche 11-8 in the remaining points, winning the set and the match, 3-0.
SVC had 47 kills as a team compared to 24 from the Red Hawks. The Bearcats also recorded 42 assists, compared to just 23 from La Roche and had 86 digs as a team.
Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, October 8 when they travel to Bethany for a PAC match. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 noon at Bethany College.
