Bearcats fall in PAC Quarterfinals

LATROBE, Pa (Nov. 1)- The Saint Vincent women's volleyball team played host to Chatham in a PAC Quarterfinal matchup, where the fifth-seeded Cougars prevailed with a 3-1 win on the road.
 
Chatham won the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 26-24. The Bearcats responded winning the third set 25-23 before falling in the final set, 25-23.
 
Kaelyn Staples led the way for Saint Vincent with 19 kills. Luciana Polk added 10 kills for SVC, while Haley Stormer tallied six kills. Carly Augustine had team highs in assists with 19 and digs with 24. Vivian Poach recorded 16 assists and 19 digs, while Madie Marsico tallied 22 digs.
 
The Bearcats came out of the gates with all of the momentum in the first set, as they held an early 5-1 lead. After a timeout Chatham stormed back with an 8-4 run, tying the set up at 9-9. SVC answered, scoring six of the next nine points to regain the lead at 15-12, but the Cougars wouldn't go away. Chatham went on a 4-1 run to tie the match once again at 16-16. The teams traded the next few points as the Cougars held a slight edge at 22-21. Chatham finished off the set scoring the final three points to win the set (25-21) and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
 
In the second set, the Cougars controlled the early portions. Chatham held a 10-5 lead in the set. The Bearcats answered, scoring the next six points to take an 11-10 lead and increased their lead to 15-13. The Cougars answered once again, scoring four in a row to take a 17-15 lead. After a service error by Chatham and kill by Augustine, SVC tied it up at 17-17. The teams traded the next ten points as the set was tied 23-23. Chatham went on to score three of the final four points in the set to win the set (26-24), taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
 
The match was even early on in the third set, as the score was tied 9-9 after both teams traded the first several points. The match remained even as the set was then tied at 14-14, 16-16, and 20-20. The Bearcats fight to force a third set continued as they took a 23-20 lead in the set. After the Cougars scored two in a row, the Bearcats scored on a kill from Staples to hold a 24-22 lead. After a kill by Chatham, an attack error by the Cougars led the Bearcats to win the third set (25-23), keeping their hopes alive, as the match was now 2-1 in favor of Chatham.
 
In the fourth set, Chatham stormed out of the gates with an early 4-1 lead in the set. The Bearcats answered, going on a 8-3 run to take a 9-7 lead in the set. The Bearcats increased their lead to 14-11. The Cougars once again stormed back with a 6-0 run to take a 17-14 lead. Saint Vincent responded with a 3-0 run to tie the set at 17-17 and took the lead scoring two of the next three at 19-17. The teams traded the next couple of points as the Bearcats remained in the lead at 22-21. Chatham scored four of the remaining five points to win the set (25-23) and the match, 3-1.
 
The Bearcats conclude their season with a 17-8 overall record and 7-3 record in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
