Bearcats score PAC road win at Grove City, 57-47

LATROBE, Pa (Nov. 22)- The Saint Vincent women's basketball team traveled to Grove City for a Presidents Athletic Conference matchup with the Wolverines. The Bearcats scored a 57-47 road win, securing their second PAC win of the season in the last three games.
 
Ella Marconi led the charge for the Bearcats, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds. Marconi shot a strong 70 percent (7-10) from the field and was a perfect 2-2 from the free throw line in her 27 minutes of play. Emily Cavacini added 15 points, four rebounds, and four assists, going 1-3 from beyond the three-point line.
 
Madison Weber also had a strong night for the Bearcats, scoring ten points while grabbing eight rebounds and also added three assists. Alana Winkler tallied seven points, three rebounds, and three assists as well for SVC. Emily Thompson, Lizzie Bender, and Diana Mosten rounded the scoring out for Saint Vincent. Bender finished with four points and a team-high 12 rebounds, Mosten scored three points, and Thompson scored two points and grabbed two boards.
 
It was a strong first quarter both offensively and defensively for Saint Vincent. The Bearcats doubled up the Wolverines, outscoring them 20-10 in the opening quarter. SVC opened up to a quick 8-0 lead in the first two and a half minutes of play and increased their lead to 18-6 with two minutes to go in the quarter. In the final two minutes of the quarter the Wolverines cut into the Bearcats lead slightly but Saint Vincent still held the ten-point advantage.
 
In the second quarter the Wolverines stormed back, outscoring the Bearcats 12-6 in the quarter. After a three-pointer by Mosten to open the quarter, the Bearcats led by 13 at 23-10, but Grove City responded. The Wolverines held the Bearcats to just three points over the final 3:36 seconds of the first half, cutting the Bearcats lead to just four at 26-22 at the halftime break.
 
In the third quarter, Grove City continued to put the pressure on the Bearcats. Grove City outscored SVC 12-9 in the quarter. After a three-pointer from Winkler, Saint Vincent increased their lead back up to five at 33-28, but Grove City answered. The Wolverines scored the next five points, cutting the SVC lead to just one at 33-32 and took the lead after a jumper from Nina Cano at 34-33. Marconi ended the quarter with a layup to give the Bearcats a slight 35-34 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Similar to the first quarter, the Bearcats controlled the entirety of the fourth quarter. Saint Vincent closed the game out strong, outscoring the Wolverines by nine points in the quarter with a 22-13 clip. SVC opened the quarter with a quick 6-0 run to push their lead back up to seven at 41-34. The Wolverines answered with an 8-2 run of their own to cut the SVC lead back down to one at 43-42. Saint Vincent closed the remaining six minutes of the game with a 14-5 run to win the game, 57-47.
 
Saint Vincent as a team shot 23-58 from the floor and 3-9 from behind the arc, while going a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. The Bearcats had 32 points in the paint and 14 fast break points as well, while also scoring six points off of Wolverine turnovers. Defensively the Bearcats held the Wolverines to shooting just 25 percent from the field and 11 percent from beyond the three-point line.
 
The win moves the Bearcats to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the PAC. Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, November 30 when they play host to Waynesburg in a PAC match. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Robert S. Carey Center.
