LATROBE, Pa. (Feb. 23) – The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team clicked on all cylinders in its 3-0 win over visiting Mount Aloysius in the Robert S. Carey Student Center Wednesday night.
The Bearcats (2-8, 2-2 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference) topped the Mounties (3-7, 0-3 AMCC) by scores of 25-10, 25-15 and 25-17.
Ethan Kammerer had a monster game to lead the Bearcats, recording 10 kills and zero errors on 13 swings to post a .769 hitting percentage. The junior also added three blocks and three digs.
Matthew Minkin posted eight kills, four digs, two aces and one block, while
Andrew Cassidy notched seven kills and
Thomas Franey five kills and two blocks. Setter
Matthew Furrer filled up the stat sheet with 27 assists and 16 digs. Libero
Matthew Klasnic added nine digs.
As a team, the Bearcats hit a season-best .367, committing just six errors on 79 total attacks. Along with Minkin's .769 mark, Franey hit .571 (five kills/one error on seven attacks) and Cassidy .662 (seven kills/one error on 13 swings).
Conversely, the Mounties committed 21 errors vs. 23 kills on 93 attacks.
The Bearcats jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the opening set, spurred by two aces from Minkin, and the lead would continue to grow. Kammerer's first kill of the night upped the Bearcat lead to 10-3, before Furrer, Minkin and Franey would notch kills to open up a 16-6 advantage. Moments later, SVC ended the set by scoring five straight points, punctuated by a Minkin kill that closed out the 25-10 win. The Bearcats committed just one attack error in the opening set, hitting at a .409 clip.
Saint Vincent got off to another hot start in the second set, this time opening up an 8-1 lead, with kills from Franey and
Anthony Ditonto and two aces by
Zachary Mumpower. After three quick points from the Mounties, SVC upped its advantage to 12-4, using two kills from Kammerer, one from Cassidy and a tandem block by Furrer and Kammerer. The Bearcat lead would eventually swell to 21-8, before Minkin closed out the set with a kill to give SVC the 25-15 decision.
Mount Aloysius scored the first point of the third set, and it would remain tight over the next several serves. The Bearcats took a 7-4 lead when Kammerer and Minkin teamed up for a block, but the Mounties came back to pull to within one at 8-7. The Bearcats answered by using a 7-0 run to open up a 15-7 lead, and the Mounties wouldn't threaten again. Cassidy, Kammerer and Minkin went on to record two kills apiece down the stretch as the Bearcats clinched the 3-0 shutout with the 25-17 set win.
Winners of two of their last three, the Bearcats will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 26, when they host AMCC foes Penn State-Behrend and Geneva for a tri-match beginning at 1 p.m. in the Carey Center.
