DAVENPORT, Fla. (March 1) – The Saint Vincent baseball team was downed 13-0 by Wartburg College on the second day of the Russ Matt Classic in Florida.
The Knights (2-2) racked 15 hits, including seven for extra bases, while limiting the Bearcats (1-1) to a single base-hit, a second inning single by
Jayke Saiani.
Wartburg score one run on two hits in the top of the first, before adding on with a two-run third inning on the strength of a two-run homer by Zach Walton. SVC starter
Zach Barberich kept the Knights scoreless over the next two frames, but Wartburg would put the game away with five runs over the sixth and seventh innings.
Barberich worked into the fifth inning, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. He was the first of four hurlers on the day for Saint Vincent.
Jordan Sabol was hit by a pitch, walked and stole a base for the Bearcats, and was the lone runner other than Saiani to reach base safely.
Wartburg's Dreyton Laveine earned the complete game victory, striking out eight against just one hit and one walk.
After an off day Wednesday, the Bearcats will be back in action on Thursday, March 3, with a noon doubleheader against Finlandia University at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida.
