LATROBE, Pa. (March 10) – The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win over visiting Carlow University in the Robert S. Carey Student Center.
After taking a close first set, 25-23, the Bearcat closed out the sweep with 25-6 and 25-12 wins in the second and third sets.
Matthew Minkin led both sides with 10 kills, while
Andrew Cassidy added nine and
Anthony Ditonto four. Defensively,
Matthew Klasnic recorded a team-best 10 digs and
Matthew Furrer eight, while
Ethan Kammerer registered three blocks and Furrer two. The Bearcats also totaled a season-best 12 service aces, with three apiece from Minkin, Ditonto and
Michael Pollak.
The Bearcats struggled to start the opening set, falling behind 5-1. After a timeout by coach
Kate McCauley, SVC regrouped, eventually tying the set at 8-8 before opening an 18-14 lead. The Celtics twice closed the gap to one point, pulling to within 20-19 and 24-23, before Cassidy ended the set with a kill to close out the 25-23 win.
Saint Vincent then took charge in the second set, hitting a stellar .500 with 11 kills against just one attack error en route to the 25-6 win. In the third set, SVC spotted Carlow a 4-1 lead, but from there, the Bearcats took over, rattling off a 12-1 run to take a 13-5 lead. The advantage continued to grow down the stretch, with SVC claiming the set by a 25-12 to close out the 3-0 win.
The Bearcats (3-12) will return to action on Saturday, March 12, traveling to Elizabethtown for a non-conference tri match against the host Blue Jays and Kean University.
