AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 5) – The Saint Vincent baseball team ended its spring break trip to Florida in fine fashion, earning a dominant 22-5 win over Fitchburg State.
The Bearcats (4-2) racked 18 hits and took advantage of six Fitchburg State (0-1) errors, scoring at least one run in all nine innings. The 22 runs mark the team's highest single-game scoring output since a 23-1 win over Mount Aloysius on April 19, 2005.
Nine different players recorded at least one hit for SVC, while six players produced multi-hit games. Jordan Sabol led the way, reaching safely five times on three hits and two walks. TJ Dailey and Zack VonStein each went 3-for-4, while Ben Menarchek, Julian Santana and Justin Wright added two hits apiece. VonStein and Dailey each cracked two doubles, while Wright doubled and tripled.
Casey Jones earned the win on the mound, allowing four runs in six innings of work with seven strikeouts. Jacob Polosky closed it out with a scoreless seventh inning, recording all three outs via strikeout.
After Fitchburg State scored an unearned run in the top of the first, the Bearcats responded in a big way, sending 10 men to the plate and scoring six runs in the bottom of the first. Dailey and Menarchek each hit RBI doubles in the inning, while Wright cracked a two-run triple.
An RBI single from Dailey upped SVC's lead to 7-2 in the second inning, and after Fitchburg plated three runs in the third to pull to within two in the top of the third, the Bearcats would again bat around in the bottom of the frame and score six runs. Wright had an RBI double, Sabol and Zach Barberich RBI singles, and Billy Perroz a sacrifice fly.
Aided by five Fitchburg errors, the Bearcats added four runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by VonStein's RBI double, before an RBI single from Blake Marshall and bases-loaded walks to Cameron Hyde and Owen Kitts in the bottom of the sixth closed out the day's scoring.
The Bearcats are now scheduled to open their northern schedule on Wednesday, March 9, with a 2 p.m. single contest at Mount Aloysius.
