LATROBE, Pa. (Apr. 2)– The Saint Vincent men's volleyball team dropped a pair of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matches at the Robert S. Carey Student Center to close out the 2022 season.
On Senior Day for the Bearcats, SVC dropped its first match, 3-1, to Medaille, before closing out the afternoon with a three-set loss to Hiram.
Match 1: Medaille 3, Saint Vincent 1 (25-23, 25-20, 25-17, 25-14)
Matthew Minkin paced Saint Vincent with 12 kills in the day's opener, while Anthony Ditonto added seven and Ethan Kammerer six. Kammerer also led SVC with two blocks, while Matthew Furrer led the team with eight digs. Furrer dished out a team-leading 26 assists.
The Mavericks took the first three of five points in set number one, with a kill, and off of two SVC errors. Saint Vincent and Medaille traded the next few points, before the Bearcats pulled ahead, 18-17. They continued to add down the stretch, closing the set on a 7-6 run to take the 25-23 set victory.
Medaille got off to a strong start in the second set, opening up leads of 6-2 and 12-6, before the Bearcats used a team effort to charge back. After kills from Ditonto and Kammerer and two errors from the Mavericks, the Bearcats pulled to within three, 13-10, and after the two teams traded points, the Medaille went on a lengthy run. Three straight Medaille points increased their lead to six, 21-15. The Bearcats didn't give up as they cut the deficit down to four at the end but it wasn't enough as the Mavericks took the set 25-20 and even the match at one apiece.
The Mavericks opened up a 4-1 lead in the third set, but Saint Vincent responded with two of the next three points to cut the deficit to one, 4-3. The Bearcats struggled as Medaille tallied the next five of six points, off of three SVC attack errors, 9-4. The back-and-forth theme continued, with SVC trailing by three, 18-15. The Mavericks battled back to take the next seven of nine points to take the set 25-17 and lead 2-1.
The fourth set was the same as the third, as Medaille charged out of the gates and lead the Bearcats by eight, 13-5. SVC tried to fight back but could not gain momentum as the Mavericks won the fourth and final set 25-14 to take the victory.
Match 2: Hiram 3, Saint Vincent 0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-17)
The Bearcats were strong to open the day's second match, quickly jumping out to a 6-4 lead on five Terrier errors and a kill from Ditonto. The Saint Vincent lead would dwindle as Hiram scored the next 11 straight points to take the 15-6 lead over SVC. The deficit was too much to overcome as Hiram took the first set 25-11.
Hiram got off to a strong start in the second set, jumping out to a 15-10 lead. The Bearcats countered back with two points off of two Terrier service errors. As was the case in the previous set, however, Hiram heated up down the stretch to take the set, 25-18.
The Terriers kept the momentum as the third set began, scoring the first five of six points before eventually opening up a 12-6 lead. The Bearcats battled back as Kammerer tallied three straight service aces but they would get no closer, as Hiram increased their lead over the remainder of the match to close out a 25-17 win and take the second match of the day.
Minkin again led the Bearcats with 10 kills. Thomas Franey led SVC with three blocks, while Minkin led the defense with 12 digs. Furrer handed out 11 assists.
Prior to the Medaille match, the Bearcat senior class of Franey, Furrer and Mark Stephenson were recognized in an on-court ceremony.
