WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 23) – A day after prevailing in a one-run pitcher's duel, the Saint Vincent baseball team showcased a powerful offense in a convincing doubleheader sweep at Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Waynesburg
With their 10-1 and 19-7 victories over the Yellow Jackets, the Bearcats (20-8, 16-2 PAC) extended their program-record winning streak to 16 games.
GAME ONE: Saint Vincent 10, Waynesburg 1
In the opener, the Bearcats racked 14 hits and scored at least one run in six of the seven innings, while starting pitcher
Justin Wright earned the win with a complete-game six-hitter.
Five different Bearcats recorded multi-hit games, with
Jordan Sabol going 3-for-4 with three doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored;
Ben Menarchek 3-for-3 with three runs scored;
TJ Dailey 2-for-5 with a triple, home run and three RBIs;
Julian Santana 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored; and
Kyle Belmont 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
SVC took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Santana was hit by a pitch to open the game, took third on a single from
John Evans and scored on an RBI ground-out by Sabol.
The Bearcats doubled up the lead in the bottom of the second. Menarchek stroked a one-out single, moved to third on a
Casey Jones single and scored on a two-out single from Santana to make it 2-0.
Saint Vincent would then break the game wide open with a three-run top of the third. Sabol opened with his first double of the day and promptly scored on Dailey's team- and PAC-leading seventh home run to make it 4-0. Two batters later, Menarchek singled and would eventually steal second and score on a Belmont single to make it 5-0.
The Bearcats made it 6-0 in the top of the fourth when Sabol's second double plated Santana, who walked to lead off the inning. After a Waynesburg solo home run in the bottom of the fifth cut the lead to 6-1, the Bearcats answered right back in the top of the sixth, as Sabol drew a two-out walk and scored on Dailey's triple to up the lead to 7-1.
SVC closed out the scoring in the top of the seventh. Menarchek started the frame with a single, and would promptly take second on a passed ball and score on another Belmont RBI single. Santana followed with a single of his own, before Sabol cleared the bases with his third two-bagger of the game to account for the final 10-1 score.
Wright improved to 3-1 on the mound and lowered his season ERA to a team-best 2.20 after working seven innings and allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts.
GAME TWO – Saint Vincent 19, Waynesburg 7
In the nightcap, the Bearcat bats picked up right where they left off in the opener, as SVC racked 19 hits – including eight for extra bases – en route to the 12-run win.
Saint Vincent broke the game open early, sending 11 men to the plate in the top of the first to score seven runs on six hits. Santana doubled twice in the inning, while Belmont, Menarchek each had RBI singles and Jones a three-run double.
Sabol opened the second inning with his second double of the game – and fifth of the doubleheader – before Dailey singled and
Jayke Saiani walked to load the bases. Menarchek would then reach on an error that scored Dailey and Sabol, before Jones came through with an RBI single to give the Bearcats their 10th run of the game.
The Bearcats added an unearned run in the top of the fourth and after Waynesburg scored twice in the bottom half to make it 11-2, SVC countered with a two-spot in the top of the fifth. Belmont was hit by a pitch and Dailey walked to open the inning, before Saiani singled to load the bases. A ball hit to right by Menarchek was misplayed, allowing Belmont to score, before an RBI groundout by
Matthew Lockwich plated Dailey and upped the lead to 13-2.
In the top of the sixth, Santana led off with a double and scored on an RBI single from Dailey to make it 14-2, before the Yellow Jackets put together their biggest inning of the day in the bottom half, scoring four runs on three hits to close the gap to 14-6.
SVC would put an exclamation point on the win with a 5-run eighth inning.
Devin Bonine smacked an RBI double,
Dimitri Gary and
Steven Manon RBI singles and
Jeremy Kruezweiser drew a bases-loaded walk in the lengthy inning that closed out the Bearcat scoring.
Thirteen different players recorded at least one hit for Saint Vincent, with Santana leading the way with three doubles in six plate appearances. Belmont, Sabol, Dailey, Saiani and Jones all has two hits, with Jones driving in five runs and Menarchek three. Dailey, Kruezweiser and Lockwich each tallied two RBIs.
Zach Barberich started on the mound and worked into the sixth inning to earn the win, allowing three earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
Andrew Stano threw a scoreless inning-and-a-third, while
Tristan Bedillion allowed one unearned run on two hits in two innings of relief.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Sunday, April 24, when they close out the three-game set with the Yellow Jackets with a single, 9-inning contest beginning at 1 p.m. at Bearcat Ballfield. On Senior Day in Latrobe, SVC's four-man senior class will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony.
