SVC drops twinbill at Westminster

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (April 30)- The Saint Vincent baseball team dropped both ends of a President's Athletic Conference doubleheader at Westminster College.

In the opener, Westminster rallied with a three-run sixth inning to win 5-2, before the Titans closed out the sweep with a 9-7 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE- WESTMINSTER 5, SAINT VINCENT 2

Game one was a pitcher's duel early on, as there were just three total runs combined through the first five innings of play.

After neither team cracked the scoreboard in the first inning, Westminster got on the board first in the second inning with a two-run homer to right field, giving them an early 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, the Bearcats finally put a run on the board, cutting into the Westminster lead. Jordan Sabol reached with a one out triple and TJ Dailey followed that up with a sacrifice fly, scoring Sabol from third and making the score 2-1.

After a scoreless fifth inning from both teams, the Bearcats tied the game up in the top of the sixth. Juliana Santana led off the sixth inning by reaching on a throwing error and advanced to second on the play. In the next at bat, Dimitri Gary ripped an RBI single to left, scoring Santana and tying the game up at 2-2. The Titans pitched out of trouble the rest of the inning and escaped with the score still sitting at 2-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Titans got the lead right back. Westminster scored three runs in the inning on four hits to go in front 5-2. The Titans backed up the three runs, shutting the door on the Bearcats in the top of the seventh to win game one.

Gary led the way for the Bearcats in game one, notching two hits with an RBI, while Billy Perroz also added a pair of hits.

Casey Jones took the loss on the mound for the Bearcats, pitching six innings, giving up five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and four walks.

Jake Vitale picked up the win on the mound for Westminster, throwing a complete game, giving up two runs (one earned), striking out six, and walking three.

GAME TWO- WESTMINSTER 9, SAINT VINCENT 7

Unlike game one, game two was a high scoring affair, as the teams combined for 16 runs on 29 hits.

Perroz led the way for Saint Vincent going 4-4 with two RBI's and a run scored. Sabol also had a big game, piecing together three hits with two RBIs, and two runs scored. Jake Saiani, Zach Barberich, and Gary all had two hits apiece as well in the loss for the Bearcats.

Jeremy Kruezwiser started the game on the mound for Saint Vincent, picking up a no decision. Kruezwiser pitched three innings, giving up three runs on four hits, while striking out five Titans. Andrew Root took the loss on the mound in relief, pitching 1.2 innings, giving up three runs (zero earned) on five hits, while striking out one.

After the game was scoreless through two innings, the Bearcats struck first in the top of the third. Saint Vincent scored three runs in the inning, giving them a 3-0 lead.

Santana reached with a one out walk, followed by a Gary double and the Bearcats had runners at second and third still with one out. Sabol then reached on an infield single, scoring Santana from third, giving the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.

Dailey followed up Sabol's single with an RBI double to right center, scoring Gary from third to give Saint Vincent 2-0 lead. After Dailey's double, Perroz notched the Bearcats fourth straight hit, as he reached on an infield single that scored Sabol, increasing the lead to 3-0, and that would remain the score for the next inning, as the game headed to the fourth inning.

After Saint Vincent went down in order in the top of the fourth, Westminster scored three runs in the bottom of the inning, tying the game up at 3-3, with the game heading to the fifth.

Both Saint Vincent and Westminster went down quietly in the fifth and the game remained tied 3-3.

In the sixth inning, the Bearcats got the lead back, scoring one run on two hits. Saint Vincent got their run on a single by Barberich, scoring Perroz after an error by the Titans, giving the Bearcats a 4-3 lead.

The Bearcats didn't hold the lead for long, as Westminster plated three runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth, giving them a 6-4 lead heading the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, Saint Vincent scored two runs to tie the game up at 6-6. First, Sabol ripped an RBI double, scoring Santana and then hit an RBI single to center scoring Sabol. SVC threatened to score more in the inning, but the Titans escaped trouble, keeping the game tied at 6-6.

As they had all day, Westminster answered right back in the bottom of the inning. The Titans scored three more runs, to grab the lead right back at 9-6 going to the eighth inning.

After neither team could score in the eighth, the Bearcats had one final shot to come back in the ninth inning.

In the top of the ninth, Gary led off the inning with a double. Then after two straight fly outs, Perroz singled to right field, scoring Gary, cutting the Titans lead to 9-7. Saiani then singled, and represented the tying run at first base, but Westminster escaped, ending the game with a fielder's choice, to grab the 9-7 victory.

Saint Vincent (22-11, 18-5 PAC) will conclude the three-game series with Westminster with a single nine-inning game on Monday, May 2. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Bearcat Ballfield. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday, May 1, but postponed due to an unfavorable weather forecast.
