Bearcats clinch PAC playoff berth with 19-13 win over Chatham

LATROBE, Pa. (May 2)- The Saint Vincent women's lacrosse team rode a steady scoring effort to a 19-13 win over Chatham in the regular season finale at UPMC Field, clinching the number four seed in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament
 
Kaylee Bandow scored three of the last four goals in the final 4:38 of the game to pull away for the win. Saint Vincent (11-7, 5-3) led by just one goal at 5-4 after one quarter of play, but outscored Chatham (6-10, 3-5) 14-9 over the remaining three quarters to win the match.
 
Bridget Doyle led the way for the Bearcats, finishing with six total points on the day on five goals and an assist. Joey Smith and Kaylee Bandow also had big days, as they scored four goals each, with Smith also picking up an assist.
 
Maggie Edwards and Emily Taylor both added three points each for the Bearcats in the win. Taylor scored two goals with an assist and Edwards scored one goal with two assists, while also totaling a team-high four caused turnovers and adding five ground balls.
 
Rachel Thatcher, Caroline Mullineaux, and Hannah-Marie Starner all got in on the scoring too, with two points each. Starner scored two goals, Mullineaux scored a goal and picked up an assist, and Thatcher had two assists to go with five ground balls.
 
Kyra Lipetzky picked up the win in goal for the Bearcats making 11 saves and collecting seven ground balls.
 
Chatham got off to a hot start scoring the first two goals of the game, taking a 2-0 lead just under five minutes into the game.
 
Saint Vincent answered right back with three goals of their own. First, Doyle scored to get the Bearcats first goal of the day. Then, less than a minute later, Smith scored on assist from Thatcher tying the game at 2-2. Edwards then scored on an unassisted goal, giving the Bearcats their first lead of the day at 3-2.
 
After Saint Vincent took the lead, the Cougars tied it up at 3-3 with a goal of their own. Bandow answered the Chatham score with a goal on an assist from Doyle giving the Bearcats the lead back at 4-3.
 
After another Chatham goal tied the game up at 4-4, Doyle scored her second goal of the quarter with 35-seconds left to take a 5-4 lead into the second quarter.
 
In the second quarter, it was all Saint Vincent, as the Bearcats outscored the Cougars 5-2 in the period. Smith scored early in the quarter on an assist from Taylor increasing the Saint Vincent lead to 6-4.
 
Chatham scored the next two goals, which were their only two goals of the period to tie the game at 6-6.

The Bearcats wouldn't lose the lead the rest of the game, as they scored the last four goals of the second quarter to take a 10-6 lead into the halftime break. Smith scored twice, while Starner and Doyle each scored once over the span. 
 
The second half started the same way the first half ended as the Bearcats continued to put pressure on the Cougars. Saint Vincent again outscored Chatham 5-2 in the third quarter, just as they did in the second quarter. Doyle and Taylor each scored two goals apiece in the third quarter, one of Taylor's goals was with a man down, and Mullineaux scored the fifth goal of the quarter for Saint Vincent, giving them a15-8 lead heading into the final quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, Chatham attempted to come back, outscoring the Bearcats 5-4, but it wasn't enough to pull out the win.
 
Chatham scored the first three goals of the quarter, cutting the Saint Vincent lead to 15-11. Then, Starner scored for the Bearcats with 6:43 remaining in the game, moving the lead back up to five at 16-11.
 
Bandow sealed the win for the Bearcats scoring their final three goals of the game, mixed in with two Chatham goals, to win the game for Saint Vincent, 19-13.
 
Saint Vincent will begin the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament on Wednesday, May 4, traveling to top-seeded Washington & Jefferson College for a 7 p.m. semifinal matchup. 
 
The winner of the SVC/W&J match will play the winner of two-seeded Grove City and three-seeded Franciscan on Saturday in the PAC championship game.
