GROVE CITY, Pa. (May 7) – The Saint Vincent men's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end with a 17-4 loss to top-seeded Grove City College in the 2022 Presidents' Athletic Conference championship game.
Grove City (15-4) used a fast start to jump out a lead it would not relinquish, scoring four unanswered goals in the first 3:43 of the first quarter.
Saint Vincent regrouped to score the game's next two goals.
Andrew Coholich got the Green and Gold on the board with 9:45 left in the quarter off an assist from
Caleb Hawkins, before
Jordan Billet's man-up goal, assisted by
Alec Richard, cut the deficit in half with 8:08 left.
The Wolverines answered with a goal with 2:51 left in the quarter to go up 5-2, before scoring the only four goals of the second frame to take a 9-2 lead at halftime. Over the decisive second quarter, Grove City outshot Saint Vincent 16-9 and forced seven Bearcat turnovers.
Four minutes into the third quarter,
Justin Wodarek snapped the SVC scoring drought by scoring off of Hawkins' second assist of the game to close the gap to 9-3, but from there, it was all Grove City. The hosts scored eight unanswered goals over the final nine minutes of the third quarter and the opening five minutes of the fourth to put the game away.
Coholich would close the evening's scoring with his second goal of the game, an unassisted tally with 3:47 left in regulation.
In his final career start in goal,
Noah Sperling recorded 12 saves for the Bearcats, marking his eighth double-digit save performance of the season.
Brody McMahon led SVC with six ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Richard,
Tyler Condrasky and
Jacob Crumling each totaled three ground balls.
Grove City was led on the scoresheet by James Petrolle, who scored five goals. The victory gave the Wolverines their third consecutive PAC championship and a berth in the upcoming NCAA Division III national tournament.
The Bearcats conclude one of the finest seasons in program history, finishing with a 13-2 overall record. The 13 wins mark the second-most in the team's 35-year history, while SVC's defense allowed a conference-low and program record 6.47 goals per game, ranking among the nation's best. Sperling finished the season with the PAC's best goals-against average at 7.25, while the SVC offense saw seven players finish with 20 or more points. Billet, who finished with 56 points, and Condrasky, who totaled 53, each eclipsed the 100-point mark for their careers.
The loss closes the careers of Sperling, Condrasky, Richard,
Ethan Cavin,
Max Schuler,
James Carden and
Casey Moore. Over the past four years, the group helped lead SVC to a 33-14 overall record, and 16-4 mark against PAC foes.
