LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 3) - The Saint Vincent women's tennis team opened its season with a Presidents' Athletic Conference win against Waynesburg, 9-0.
The Bearcats swept through doubles play with three 8-0 wins, including the first career wins for freshman Carolina Walters, paired with Angela Popovich at first doubles, as well as Emily Pierce and Bella Baumgardner at second doubles. Sophie Neubert and Julia Runk teamed up at third doubles to claim the other point for Saint Vincent.
Singles play saw Cara McLaughlin open up the scoring with a 6-0, 6-0 win at sixth singles to push the SVC lead to 4-0. Walters capped off her stellar debut with the clinching point, a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles. Following the clinch SVC saw straight sets wins by Popovich, Lydia Lieb, and Abby Donnelly, all scored 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Rebecca Kurylo rounded out the day for the Bearcats with a 6-0, 6-2 win in her collegiate debut.
The Bearcats win their premiere match for the first time since 2019 and sit at 1-0 overall and in PAC play. Saint Vincent will return to action on Friday, Sept. 9, when they travel to Franciscan for a PAC matchup against the back-to-back defending conference champion Barons.Â
