LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 14) – The Saint Vincent College women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to seven games with a 4-0 win over Franciscan University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup at rainy UPMC Field.
Four different players found the back of the net for Saint Vincent (9-3-2, 5-1-1 PAC), while goalkeeper
Madison Arnold recorded a season-high 11 saves to earn her fifth shutout win of the season.
Franciscan (5-7-1, 3-4-1 PAC) had the better of the play early on, posting four shots and three corner kicks over the game's opening 12 minutes, but the Bearcats quickly seized the momentum in the 15th minute when
Tanisha Grewal controlled a throw in the corner and set a perfect entry pass to
Jordan Kirkwood, who headed it home from the doorstep for her fourth goal of the season to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Just 12 minutes later, the Bearcats added onto the lead.
Madisen Geesaman sent a shot toward the empty corner of the net, but it was deflected out by a Franciscan defender. The rebound deflected directly to
Emma Koller, and the rookie then quickly tapped it across the goal mouth to Grewal who blasted it home to make it 2-0, which is how the score would stand at halftime.
The opening 20 minutes of the second half saw the two teams trade a number of scoreless chances, as they combined for 12 shots over the span, with Arnold turning in three saves. The Bearcats would then add some insurance with 17:04 left in regulation when
Jude Galvin corralled the ball at the top of the box and let loose a turning, right-footed blast from 15 yards out for her second marker of the season.
Following SVC's third goal, the Barons countered with a sustained push, but Arnold passed each test, turning in four more saves over the next five minutes, before Koller finished out the day's scoring with 8:29 left to play, sending home a free kick from
Grace Lamborne to up the lead to 4-0.
Arnold would turn in two more saves following a corner kick in the 85th minute to keep the clean sheet and close out the victory.
The Bearcats totaled 16 shots in the win, led by five from Grewal and three apiece by Koller, Galvin and Kirkwood.
Saint Vincent will now take to the road for a pair of PAC games in the upcoming week, beginning with a 7 p.m. matchup at Allegheny College on Wednesday, Oct. 18.
