Bearcats clinch PAC playoff berth with stalemate at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. (Oct. 18) – The Saint Vincent women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to eight games, and clinched its first berth in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Championship Tournament since 2013, with a 1-1 draw at PAC foe Allegheny College.

After the Bearcats (9-3-3, 5-1-2) yielded an early goal to the Gators (5-9-1, 3-4-1) in the fourth minute, SVC senior Tanisha Grewal scored the game-tying marker seven minutes into the second half.

Though only two goals were scored, both teams had plenty of chances, as they combined for 36 shots. Saint Vincent keeper Madison Arnold, the reigning PAC Defensive Player of the Week, recorded nine saves, including five over the game's final 20 minutes. She has now surrendered one or fewer goals in 14 of her 15 starts this season.

In the first half, each team recorded two shots over the opening three minutes, before Allegheny's Emma Miller netted the game's first goal, assisted by Julieta Schworm, just 4:19 into play.

Following the Gators' goal, Saint Vincent looked to go on the attack, outshooting their hosts 5-1 between the 10th and 21st minute, including shots on goal from Madisen Geesaman, Emma Koller and Jordan Kirkwood, but were unable to net the equalizer. The teams would trade shots over the final 10 minutes of the half, and the Gators entered the intermission with the one-goal lead.

The Bearcats seized the momentum coming out of halftime, recording a shot and a corner kick in the opening two minutes, before Grewal's 10th goal of the season tied the game at the 52:43 mark.

SVC looked poised to take the lead, with Cori Bieber and Grewal putting shots on goal over the next two minutes, but both were saved by Gator keeper Kari May. Arnold would then keep the game tied by recording three saves between the 63rd and 69th minutes.

Play remained back-and-forth over the next several minutes before the Gators put together a late flurry. Arnold turned in her eighth save of the night with just over eight minutes left to play, before the 88th minute saw one Gator attempt hit the post and a second attempt blocked, leading to a corner kick, off of which Arnold turned in a point-blank save with 1:28 left to play. A final Allegheny crack with 26 seconds remaining went wide, and the game would then end in a deadlock.

Saint Vincent recorded 16 shots on the night, led by four from Grewal, three by Geesaman and two apiece from Bieber, Koller and Lexi Durkacs. May tallied seven saves in goal for the Gators.

The Bearcats will now return to northwestern Pennsylvania for their next match, traveling to PAC-leading Grove City for a pivotal noon match on Saturday, Oct. 21.

With two matches remaining in the regular season, the Bearcats' 17 points are good for third in the PAC, one behind second-place Westminster, which holds a 6-2 conference mark, and five back of Grove City, which enters Saturday's match with a 7-0-1 league mark. The top two seeds in the six-team conference playoff earn first round byes, while the third and fourth seeds will host a PAC quarterfinal match on Saturday, Oct. 28.
