LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 21) – The Saint Vincent women's swimming team was defeated, 174-91, by Mount Union in its 2023-24 season-opener at the Resnik Pool.
Despite the loss to the perennially strong Raiders, the Bearcats turned in a number of strong performances in their first outing of the season.
The Bearcat started the afternoon in fine fashion, as the foursome of
Abby Leskovansky,
Valerie Clabaugh,
Emma Martz and
Sarah Alexander took first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:58.62 to win by a quarter of a second.
Rachel Hutchinson led SVC in the next event, taking second in the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:44.20, while teammate
Brook McDermott finished fourth in 12:13.70.
After Alexander turned in a third-place time of 2:08.33 in the 200-yard freestyle, Leskovansky finished runner-up in the 50-yard backstroke in 30.51 seconds. The Bearcats would then turn in an impressive showing in the 50-yard breaststroke, with Clabaugh winning in 34.26 seconds, just ahead of teammate
Lily Holsey, who touched in 34.54 seconds.
Martz paced the Bearcats in the 100-yard butterfly, placing third in 1:05.26, while Leskovansky earned a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle in 26.89 seconds.
Alexander placed third (59.00 seconds) and
Malia Carns fourth (1:02.20) in the 100-yard freestyle, before Leskovansky's busy afternoon continued with a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:09.07.
Clabaugh earned her second individual victory of the afternoon in the 100-yard breaststroke, earning a one-second win in 1:14.83, with Martz placing third in 1:15.71.
Hutchinson and McDermott finished 3-4 in the 500-yard freestyle, with the former posting a time of 5:36.72 and the latter 5:56.83, before Holsey earned a third-place finish in the 50-yard butterfly in 30.59 seconds.
In the penultimate event of the day, Martz picked up a three-second win in the 100-yard individual medley, posting a time of 1:06.34, with Holsey taking third in 1:10.12 and Clabaugh fourth in 1:10.22.
The Bearcats would then close the afternoon with a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with Alexander, Hutchinson, McDermott and Carns teaming up for a time of 1:50.33
Saint Vincent will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 27, hosting Presidents' Athletic Conference foe Allegheny College at 6 p.m. in the Resnik Pool.
