ALTOONA, Pa. (Oct. 4) -- The Saint Vincent men's tennis team edged the Penn State-Altoona Lions in a thrilling non-conference road match, 5-4.
The Bearcats got off to an inauspicious start in doubles falling behind early in all three matches before ultimately dropping the top two flights. However, the freshman pairing of Brady Johnson and Josh Havrilla battled to an 8-3 win in the third flight to put SVC on the board, trailing 2-1Â heading into singles play.
August Lawrence tied the match back up with a 6-2, 6-3 win at fourth singles before the Lions pounced again with a win at second singles to reclaim the lead.
Everything was all square, 3-3, once again after Havrilla reeled off twelve straight games after losing his first to win 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles. After a tough-fought battle at first singles Saint Vincent was once again trailing facing a 4-3Â deficit. Needing both remaining points to secure a victory the Bearcats saw Jack Citrone claim a 6-1, 6-4 win at third singles just seconds before Matthew Sadusky powered through to a 6-4, 6-2 win at sixth singles to clinch the match for the green and gold, 5-4.
With the win SVC continues their hot start in the rall and moves to 3-0 on the year. The Bearcat netters will return to action for their rall finale on Monday, Oct. 9 against Westminster. The match will be held at the SVC Courts and begin at 4 p.m.
