Women's soccer salvages tie on Grewal's late strike

LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 4) – A late goal by senior Tanisha Grewal salvaged a 1-1 tie for the Saint Vincent College women's soccer team against visiting Penn College in non-conference action at a sun-splashed UPMC Field.

Trailing 1-0 with just 3:05 left in regulation, Grewal headed home a high, arching entry pass from Jude Galvin on the doorstep to score the equalizer for the Bearcats (6-3-2, 2-1-1), who extended their unbeaten streak to four games.

The Bearcats out-shot the Wildcats (7-1-6) 23-13 in the contest, while taking six corner kicks to the visitors' two. Madison Arnold went the distance in goal for Saint Vincent and stopped four of five shots.

Though the first half was scoreless, both teams had opportunities. Over the first 18 minutes of play, Saint Vincent out-shot Penn 8-2, with Wildcat keeper Morgan Solano turning in three early saves. Arnold would also make three saves over the final 20 minutes of the half, as the teams went into the intermission in a scoreless tie. The Bearcats closed the opening frame with a 12-7 advantage in shots and took all four first half corner kicks.

The Bearcats had a prime chance to score the go-ahead goal early in the second half. In the 54th minute, SVC racked three shots and two quick corner kicks, but two shots were blocked, and another saved by Solano, to keep the game scoreless.

Saint Vincent continued to hold the edge in possession, but Penn took the lead with 11:06 left, when Sara Darlington scored directly off a well-executed corner kick.

With just under four minutes left, the Bearcats intercepted a Wildcat throw-in at midfield, and began a rush into the offensive zone. Galvin zig zagged down the middle of the field, before dropping off a pass to Jordan Kirkwood near the corner. Kirkwood promptly gave it back to Galvin, who skied an entry pass toward the goal. Grewal then outleaped a pair of Penn defenders and headed it home to tie the game.

The Bearcats had one last-ditch effort to score the go-ahead goal, but Grewal's attempt off of a cross in front went just high, and the game ended in a draw.

Ten different players were credited with at least one shot for Saint Vincent, led by seven from Grewal and five from Emma Koller. Penn College was paced by Darlington, who also had seven shots, while Solano ended with eight saves.

Saint Vincent will return to Presidents' Athletic Conference action this Saturday, Oct. 7, traveling to West Virginia to take on Bethany College at 1 p.m.
