LATROBE, Pa. (Nov. 11) – The Saint Vincent men's basketball team rolled to a 103-73 victory over visiting Penn State-Fayette in a Saturday night tilt in the Robert S. Carey Student Center.
Jaden Gales led four Saint Vincent (2-0) scorers in double figures with 23 points, while
Mike Iuzzolino,
Osyon Jones and
Dev Ostrowski each netted 13 points. Iuzzolino also dished a game-high 10 assists for his first career double-double, while he narrowly missed a triple-double, as he gathered 7 rebounds to tie
Tayler McNeal for the team lead.
The Bearcats rolled from the start, with Ostrowski and Jones doing all of the scoring in a game-opening 9-0 run. A quick Penn State-Fayette time out did little to stop the momentum, with Iuzzolino, Gales, Jones and McNeal all scoring over the next three minutes to open up a commanding 18-2 advantage with 15:23 left in the half.
The Lions scored eight straight points to pull to within single digits, 18-10, with 13:09 to go, but the Bearcats regrouped. Five straight points from
Jordan Lucas-Johnson would push the lead back to 29-14 with 8:24 left, and the SVC advantage would hover between 12-15 points over the next several minutes.
Saint Vincent's advantage would extend to 47-25 at the intermission, as the Bearcats closed the half on a 7-0 run, highlighted by an alley-oop dunk by Gales off of a feed from McNeal and a long Iuzzolino three-pointer.
The Bearcats started the second half in much of the same fashion as they did the first, outscoring the Lions 11-4 over the opening three minutes to open up a 58-29 lead on a Gales layup with 17 minutes left.
At the midway point of the second half, Iuzzolino scored five points in a 20-second span, including his second trey of the night, before he connected with Gales on another thunderous alley-oop dunk to extend the lead to 81-49 with 8:43 remaining.
The SVC lead continued to swell, eventually reaching 89-52 on an Ostrowski offensive put-back with just under six minutes left, before the Bearcats reached the century mark when
Jake DeMotte cashed in on a conventional three-point play with 58 seconds remaining.
A total of 12 Bearcats scored at least three points in the victory and eight scored at least six points. Lucas-Johnson came off the bench to score nine points in just 10 minutes of play, going 4-for-4 from the field, while McNeal scored seven points and
Lucas Measel and
Chris Peccon six apiece, with Measel going 3-for-3 from the floor and Peccon cashing in on two three-pointers.
Saint Vincent shot a strong 58 percent from the field (45-77), including a stellar 64 percent (25-39) over the second half. The Bearcats also cashed in on 8 of 19 three-point attempts, while outrebounding the Lions 45-36. Saint Vincent held a commanding 70-54 advantage in points in the paint, while the SVC defense forced 17 turnovers, with Gales and Jones each grabbing two steals.
Penn State-Fayette (2-1) was led on the scoresheet by Torrian Jenkins, who scored 17 points, while Dasilas Jones netted 14 and Emmanuel Dotson 13.
The Bearcats will now turn their attention to the Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule, as they open conference play on Wednesday, Nov. 15, hosting defending conference champ Chatham University at 7:30 p.m. in the Carey Center.
