Second Half Surge Lifts SVC Past Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. (Nov. 21)- The Saint Vincent women's basketball team bounced back with a big 80-45 win after a big second half surge by the Bearcats.
 
After being up by just five at the halftime break, Saint Vincent (3-3, 2-1 PAC) poured it on Thiel (0-4, 0-3 PAC) in the second half, outscoring Thiel 50-20 in the half to secure the 35-point win.
 
The Bearcats were led by four scorers who finished in double figures. Emily Cavacini and Camdon Bashor both recorded 12 points for the Bearcats. Cavacini added six assists and two rebounds as well, while Bashor recorded three assists and four rebounds.
 
Emily Thompson added 11 points on 4-12 shooting from the field, including going 3-5 beyond the three-point line. Kayla Sharman notched a career-high 11 points, while also dishing out three assists and grabbing two rebounds.
 
Reese Gadsby added eight points and six rebounds for SVC, while Madison Weber tallied seven points and seven rebounds for the Bearcats. Kate Bollinger added four points and Alana Winkler scored four points, while grabbing seven rebounds.
 
Rounding out the scoring for SVC was Cadence Smith and Makenna Maier with two points each, while Danielle Pontius added a point from the free-throw line.
 
It was a strong first quarter for SVC, limiting the Tomcats to just seven points in the opening quarter. Saint Vincent held the Tomcats scoreless for the first six and a half minutes of play as SVC took a quick 10-0 lead. Weber scored four of the Bearcats ten points on the run.
 
The rest of the quarter was played evenly as both teams scored seven points in the final four minutes of the quarter with Saint Vincent holding a commanding 17-7 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
SVC opened their lead up the 15 in the opening few minutes of the second quarter taking a 27-12 lead before Thiel started to cut into the Bearcats lead. Thiel went on a 13-2 run over the next several minutes to get the Bearcats lead down to four at 29-25 with 18 seconds remaining in the quarter.
 
Cavacini split a pair of free throws to give SVC a five-point lead at 30-25 heading into halftime break.
 
It was all Saint Vincent in the third quarter as the Bearcats outscored Thiel 25-9 in the quarter. SVC opened their lead up to 20 at the 4:06 mark of the second quarter after a good three-pointer by Thompson as Saint Vincent led 49-29.
 
The Bearcats continued on the attack, outscoring the Tomcats 6-5 over the final four minutes to take a 55-34 lead heading into the final quarter.
 
Saint Vincent's surge continued into the fourth quarter as the Bearcats outscored Thiel 25-11 in the final quarter to secure their victory. The Bearcats opened their lead up to 27 in the first three minutes and change of the final quarter after another successful layup made by Bashor gave SVC a 64-37 lead.
 
From that point on the SVC lead staggered between 30-35 points over the remaining few minutes of the contest to give Saint Vincent the bounce back win.
 
SVC's strong defense once again showed up, holding Thiel to shoot just 25 percent (14-56) from the field and 27 percent (7-26) from beyond the three-point line. Saint Vincent also forced 20 Thiel turnovers in which they scored 24 points off of.
 
Offensively, Saint Vincent was 30-72 (42 percent) from the field and 7-18 (39 percent) from beyond the three-point line. SVC also scored 40 points in the paint and got 39 points from players coming off of the bench in the win as well.
 
The Bearcats will enjoy a break heading into the Thanksgiving holiday before they return to action on Saturday, December 2 when they travel to Waynesburg for a PAC matchup against the Yellow Jackets. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Waynesburg.
